I have also wondered that many times. I have read many threads about the hands being to short and no date function as the main criticism. I think that is what keeps people from trying this watch on and if people would over look that and at least try it on they will be amazed. When I got mine my A D didnt even have one and had to get one from another store. My guy told me it wasnt one of the best sellers. Well I worked that statement into my favor and thus worked him down on price! If more people would just try it on they will be amazed. Watch wears and looks great. Plus it has alot of value for the money even without a discount and when you do get a discount you really have got something special. The no date function gives it a very clean and classy look IMO and the new size makes it look even better. Congrats on yours.

Bought the same one a few months ago and really love it.. it sits very comfortably on the wrist. the matte dial actually looks better at certain angles compared to the previous version glossy dial..now if only Rolex added a date window, that would qualify as my perfect watch..

I think it takes balls and incredibly good taste to buy this as your first Rolex. I wear mine to work everyday because it is the most understated watch in my collection. It's great to have a watch that feels so great on your wrist that doesn't cause hard feelings. I also love that it does not have a bubble, that works better on my 80's oyster.

Very nice! Embarrassed to admit I didn't know they had matte dials, which is one of the two reasons I (still) prefer the 'ol 1016. The other reason being I don't prefer white metal surrounds. With this newly discovered info about matte dials, I may need to reconsider. You're absolutely right about trying them on and giving them a chance!

I can guess. For the non-WIS and non-TRF community, the Explorer I is probably "misunderstood." They see that it lacks date, GMT, rotating bezel, and ultra-deep water resistance functions, and they may not understand how it is any different than the Air-Kings or OPs, which also come in <40mm sizes, include 3-6-9 dials, Oyster bracelets, smooth bezels, and lack these other functions. To put it another way, many people may not understand why the Explorer is notably more expensive than these other models. Accordingly, many of these folks seeking a more understated watch will go for Air-Kings and OPs, while people willing to spend a little more may want more (perceived) bang for their buck and will go for other professional models or DJs. Of course, we know that all of these watches are distinct and that they are all internally and externally gorgeous in their own ways, but the public at large probably doesn't appreciate these things as much as we do. (Plus, the Explorer doesn't scream "ROLEX!!!," which some buyers may want from their watches.)

That's my two cents from a guy that considered many watches before finding his one.

Understated, classic and rugged. What's not to like?

Congrats!
