Getting my first rolex!

Hi guys!

I'm and avid Panerai fan but looking to get my first Rolex. I really like the new 114060 ND Sub and the new 42mm explorer 2 White dial. What do you guys think of these two models? Which has the better movement? I haven't seen the black dial explorer 2 in person, what do you think of that one?

I have tried the 42mm explorer and it looks good on my wrist. I tried a 16610 to roughly estimate the size of the 114060 but it seems that the 114060 has a different case? Is it true? I feel that the 16610 looks small on my wrist.

I also have tried DSSD and Sea dweller. the DSSD is too big IMHO (even though I rock 47mm PAMs..) for a rolex but I like the sea dweller. I wish the sub's size was closer to a sea dweller..

Is the GMT Master 2 bigger than a sub?

I'm worried with the 100m water rating of the explorer 2 though to take swimming as when I swim, I swim vigorously.

Cheers guys!

hi glenn,

if you're a pam guy, i'd probably look at the exp2 polar first. its a great watch and the width feels at home when switching from my 210.

16610 may be too small for a pam guy at this stage... its actually the same overall width as the newer 116610c but the supercase gives a much larger impression. its generally thicker too.

as for the 100m wr ratings, unless you're a very serious diver, i wouldn't worry too much.

best to try all locally and go from there as with most watch decisions.

good luck!!

Two tough choices but in terms of movement I'd say they're not much different. Since you're a first timer in Rolex, go for the Sub. That's a classic.

Goodness. A Classic verses an Evolved Classic. Choices, choices. A non-date Submariner? The Submariner wins. Sorry, folks. No contest.

I fell in love with this form over forty years ago as did at least another who wrote a book about it. I have just read it and you may like to also. It is a story about the author's experience with such a problem and how he solved it. It is called "My Rolex; My Passion" and is a good read.

In Calgary, it was available at The Owl's Nest Books, in Britannia, and is also order-able by sending an email to [email protected] and writing Rolex Book in the subject line. They will send order info. You might find it a fascinating input to your decision process. If you are interested.

You can NEVER go wrong with a Sub, but ANY Rolex ROCKS!! (I even have a gold 1939 I've been known to wear on special occasions!)

I agree, for the first Rolex, always go with a sub. It is a classic. Btw, welcome to the dark side. Lol

Hey Glenn - Hard to choose between the Exp2 and ND-C.
I'm gonna say 114060 as a first. The new Subs are hard to beat.
If you can, spend some time in an AD weighing your options.
Good luck.

Well you could try a 16600 SD and today most of the Rolex mens Oyster range is based on one calibre the cal 3135, they just add or remove complications. The cases on the older 16610 and the new 116610 and 114060 there is not a lot of difference except now the ceramic models have a slightly different style case. And you will have no problems swimming with any of the Rolex oyster range even snorkeling.

Get the Subc, its bigger than the old Sub and can take more of a swimming/pounding/underwater naughtiness than the Expy.

Thanks for all the input guys! I think I'm gonna go with the 114060. I'm gonna try it out first though. I choose the no date because of the more balanced dial and the lack of cyclops (i hate it..)

Cheers

I would go Sub. I just bought one and love it. I was concerned about the size being too small as well. Now I am use to it. I have no regrets.

I'm going to say the Exp II is where you want to go on this one. Even though you swim vigorously.

Unless your vigorous swimming takes you really deep, you should be fine. In fact, I would not hesitate scuba diving with mine.

The Pam owners seem to first gravitate toward the Sub!
