thinking out loud....
more than asking, i am just kind of thinking out loud. i think i know what you guys would say, but here goes anyway.....
in about a month or so, i am going to pop the question to my girlfriend. so i am currently looking into rings. thinking about 15k. i currently have a three watch rotation, but really only wear my explorer II (recently realized how much i like this watch, and it has been on since). i have the cash to pay for the ring outright. however, i tend to worry more about tomorrow than most people and i prefer to keep the cash. this most especially as i will also be paying for the wedding too. i have the cash for that as well, but i like to keep a certain amount liquid at all times. i don't see the economy getting any better and i own my own businesses, so i am always looking to the future and want to ensure i will be able to provide....i like to have a large cushion. it helps me sleep at night..... so i am thinking i will sell my hulk and GMT to fund the ring. i truly do love these watches. i think they are amazing. but i like the security and the cash more....i think. and i figure if all continues to go well with the businesses in the future, i can buy them back.......at a loss for sure, but this is the dilemma.

Why not spend the money you have, and if you at any time need more, then you sell the watches. Having a Rolex on your wrist is not far from cash in your wallet anyway. These are just my thoughts.

You're a wise man, my friend. Thinking ahead like that.
If it were me, I'd keep the Explorer. But that depends on you: what you do for work and play and general life. |

and yes, the explorer suits my life and what i do more than the others. i really love the other two, but out of the three.....it would have to be the most applicable.

I agree with Mike. You need to make sure she will let you buy them back later. Lol. Good luck and congrats.

you can always sell the watches later if you are really in dire need of cash.

no reason you cant sell those models at anytime you need cash.
rolex is like money in the bank or should i say, just as volatile as money in the bank, but not more sell them because your done with them, not because you might this or that and imho do not attach the sale of something you passionate about with your bride to be... could lead to a point of resentment down the road. and as others have said, buying something back is likely to be a committee decision moving forward congratulations on finding someone special, all the best

Perhaps it doesn't need to be an all-or-nothing decision. Keep the ExpII42 and one other watch and let your least favorite one go to fund the ring.

I agree I would only sell 1 if it makes you feel more at ease about the purchase. It sounds like you really have a great head on your shoulders (and a great girl seeing as how she is upset you would sell your watches). The great thing about a rolex is if you ever are in need of any cash you can always just sell them real quick. So I would keep 1 of the 2 go into a 2 watch rotation and if anything ever starts to hit the fan its not like the value of your hulk or GMT is going to go down over the next few years.
That way you can have the best of both worlds a beautiful girl with a ring on her finger and 2 fantastic watches in case you ever get bored of the EXPII.... I would keep the HULK and EXP II =) good luck my friend and I hope it all works out for you! |

As long as you won't look at the ring and think about the watches you gave up, why not?

You can always buy them back in the future, where are you planning on getting the ring? There are a few guys/gals here that can probably steer you in the right direction for diamonds so you'll be able to save and get a better quality stone. When I got engaged I contacted a family friend who use to own jewelry stores and he brought me directly to his wholesale guy and we made a deal. Wholesale means straight cash, but that's what you're ready for anyway. If you don't already have a place lined up ask for diamond help here for north jersey/NYC. Also, it's cheaper to buy the stones separately and have them set.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice guys. I'm thinking sell one is probably the best bet.
Now the hard part: deciding which one....

$ is getting battered like hell in these recent years, I don't see the central bank of Rolex flooding the market in the same way! In my eyes, a Rolex is a much better security to hold than greenback... obviously a Rolex is not as liquid as cash... but I don't think you'd have too much trouble selling if you had to.... And note the rate of price increase on Rolex as of late (+ factor in the value of 'enjoyment' in $$ terms) and this is certainly looking a lot more desirable home for your cash than a few digits on your monthly statement!
If you don't have enough cash, sure you gotta sell one to fund it. But if you do have the cash, then the watches are not much worse than having a cash buffer in my eyes. |

People talk about Rolex being like cash. Then they tell your buyers to buy the seller, not the watch.
How's your sales feedback? If you have spotless feedback as a seller, then your Rolex is liquid IF YOU ASK FOR LESS THAN MARKET PRICE so the buyer comes to you instead of all the other reputable sellers out there with the same watches. You probably can't go to your jeweler, pick a ring, then say "I'll take it, here's some cash and some Rolexes." Probably made my point, but just in case: sell the lightly rotated Rolex pair in advance and have cash in hand for the ring/wedding. |

If you are really worried about the economy and general business environment, then sell your more illiquid assets first, before a potential downdraft. Cash is always king, and if things get tight, the market for a luxury watch may be weaker than expected, while everyone wants to go to cash at the same time. One of the mistakes LTCM made was selling their most liquid positions when the market turned against them. In the end, they got caught holding very illiquid positions which were dubiously marked to market by the "rescue squad".

I think he's right here. A rolex is only worth how much someone is willing to pay for it. Depending on where he lives the market there might be quite different. I remember when the recession hit everyone was trying to dump their luxury goods and if you had the cash you could buy things cheap. Hold onto the cash. I myself like to keep a good amount liquid as well.
