Fake Rolex box?
Had a couple of comments when I posted pics of two old Rolex watch boxes I have that the following is fake. Would appreciate additional details on how one can tell. I took new shots with as much macro detail as I can manage:

Can you really not tell that is fake? Rolex= Perfection, even in their presentation. In the small pics on an iPhone I can see they are far from perfect.

it does not look good, unless that is damage in the corner of the box in the photo, crude finish imho, what material is the cushion and cover made out of, how thick and soft is it ? rather thick and soft or more thin and paper like, i am still not 100% sure with those photos only to go on. Is the wood lacquered also ?

^Yes the edges of each piece of wood is not cut accurately (looks to be hand-sawed with rough and uneven edges) and the wooden areas are not lacquered. The inner cushion in and of itself is literally a piece of yellow foam wrapped in a stitched cover, unsure what fabric exactly, and the cushion cover is thin but soft and feels rougher than felt.
If I'm also looking closely enough, the print on the outer cardboard box is dot matrix which is more modern technology no? Older print presses would have a different print finish. Also, there is no space between ROLEX and S.A. on the back of the box. |

^No worries, and thank you for the compliments. I read TRF daily out of passion for these mechanical afflictions of the wrist and seldom post unless I'm feeling incredibly inclined to.

Seen on Ebay all the time, unfortunately, they will not take them out.
See this one that sold recently for $87... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-Oyster...p2047675.l2557 |

That Ebay seller seems to be a serial 'vendor'; he's passed two or three of these in the last 14 days; now I've done a bit of fishing, and these fakes sell for around $6 per unit plus postage; let's assume a total of $20 a piece.......
He's at least doubling - possibly trebling his 'investment'... I'm in the wrong business! Dave |

Saw these fake boxes all the time in Iraq. The flea market vendors would include them with the fakes watches that they were selling for about $20.00 to $30.00. You can tell they are fakes from a mile away. Poor construction, poor materails, no finish at all on the wood components, paper thin pillow flaps, etc, etc, etc!
