The Hobbit: A Disappointed Journey

First of all I did not watch this movie as a Lord of the ring fan (I have never watched any of the LOTR movies). I decided to watch this simply to experience the 3D and the highly raved high frame rate (HFR) in which it was filmed (twice the frame rate of a typical film).

I have to say it is an absolute disappointment both with the movie itself and the 3D + HFR effects.

I was instantly disappointed at the very first frame of the movie realising that the film has hit itself in the foot with the HFR, it was so clear in definition that it looked like a TV show rather than a movie film

I was falling asleep during the first 1/4 of the film before any action scene came out, I barely woke up when the actions started anyway...it was that bad. The character's development and acting seems very fake & artificial which is not easy to achieve seeing its already a fake aka fantasy flim.

Overall its a film that tries-too-hard and if I can turn back the time I would not spend a single dime watching it in the cinema

BTW the ending is preparing itself for the next instalment.

If you do decide to go to the movie simply to enjoy a 3D experience with interesting storyline in a fascinating film I recommend watching Disney's animation Wreck-it-Ralph. I am still overwhelmed by this animation, it is the best animation flim I have watched

Huh, I have enjoyed all of the LOTR movies and books and I didn't think they did a bad job with the hobbit. Just a little annoyed they broke it into 3 parts.

I thought it was fine. Once my brain adjusted to the 3d I started watching the film and not the effects. That's when I really started to enjoy it. Just my $.02.

The Hobbit is the slimmest book in the saga of LOTR. Cutting it into 3 parts means that a lot of the movie (and the two that follow) is going to be slow and boring as filler is needed to rack up all that screen time. Peter Jackson did the story a disservice by succumbing to marketing forces. He chose the dollar over the story, and I thought he was a bit more of a Tolkien fan to do that.

I agree, LOTR needed 3 films and 10 hours to faithfully tell the story but the Hobbit should really be one 3 hour film, like Fellowship. Shame that Jackson who once was so determined to be true to Tolkien has succumbed to the Studio and box office.

its funny because the cinema owners hate these long films because it cuts down on the number of showings per day.

Since the advent of 3-D, the main problem has been that the effect itself was expected to carry the film, while all the elements of good cinema were ignored or given short shrift.

With the advent of truly convincing special effects, there have been no shortage of films that rely mostly on those effects to the near exclusion of what it takes to produce good cinema.

Combine modern 3-D, HFR, and an adaptation of a wildly popular book series and eventually some Hollywood types will take the avenue of least resistance to make the most money possible.

they screwed up the movies with deus ex machina like the constant intervention of the eagles etc.

plus watching people run around the New Zealand landscape gets a bit boring.

Very disappointed. As others have mentioned it never should have been broken into three parts. Absurd IMHO.

I liked it, but it was all filler. It should have been one film o maybe 3.5 hours. I guess they will deal with Smaug in the next one. It looks like they are already near the mountain, so they won't meet Beorn. Then the final battle in the last.
