Hello My Fellow WISs,

Yesterday I was at a welcome home ceremony for a Battalion in my unit. Because when I have nothing else to do with my mind, I watch gaze (like any fellow respectable WIS) and noticed a female Solder wearing a Fossil that looked like at Daytona (yes, I told her "Wow, that looks like a Daytona"). I was then welcoming another Soldier home and noticed his father had on what looked like a Day Date (insert foot in mouth here) and I asked, "Is that a Rolex?" His reply, sheepishly I might add was, "Oh, no, its a Greun, but has all the bells and whistles of a Rolex" [excluding it being an automatic]. The Soldier had to explain to his mother that I was "big into watches" as she couldn't understand why I was assaulting her husband about his watch. I also think the son was a little peeved that I may have "called his pops out," oh well, I did say I inserted my foot into my mouth. I told him it was nice and looked just like a DD and kept it moving to welcome more Soldiers home. I even shook the hand of a General in passing just for giggles (they expect you to stop and talk, I dont ).

To note, I am not against anyone wearing a Rolex homage. I wore two (Seiko SKX007 & 009) for six months in Afghanistan, then bumped my head and walked into an AD and left with a Sub C, joined TRF, and a few weeks later got a Sub SS. I think I'm cured now though ). I would just to get a little consensus, and hopefully some friendly banter.

So my question for my Saturday TRF lurkers is "Which Rolex do you think is the most copied?"

Since becoming a WIS I've learned not to talk watches with most people due to "foot in mouth" situations.
I think the sub is most copied, or maybe it's just the oyster bracelet copy I often see

All kidding aside, I'm not sure what was so bad about you simply asking a guy if his watch is a Rolex. The question gets asked innocently all the time so if you're a pretender and don't won't to deal with it, don't wear a knock-off.

I do it all the time. It's a great ice breaker. I think it's all in the delivery.

I work at base with a lot of admirals whom I see regularly as patients. As their physician and not a line officer they usually like the fact that I don't "stop and talk" and instead give them hell about their cholesterol. I like your story about shaking hands and moving on; their aids get pissed whenever I call the admiral directly (private health information) instead of going through them.

To get to your question though, the Sub is no doubt the most copied watch. I see a lot of watches everyday and if I am not sure if it's a Rolex or Breitling (a lot of Navy pilots wear Breitlings) I just say "I like your watch." They will either open up about it just say thanks and move on.

Na you all are wrong my two cents would be the date just or the day date, if you look back at all the watch brands back in the day to now they all looked like date just and day dates.

good copies? Subs, without a doubt. Just take a look at the invicta copy. From more then 3 feet away its hard to tell ifi its a real TT sub. A few years ago I would have said the presidential in gold. I have seen a ton of watches that I thought were YG presidentials, but turned out to be seiko's, or citizens or some unheard of foreign brand. But nowadays I would say the Sub has passed it in the number of available copy cat watches made that look really good and close enough to a real rolex that you need to read the face to know its a copy.

Example one: On a plane flight on a hunting trip. I sit down and soon joined by another fellow next to me. I notice the Explorer 1 on his wrist (I always look at a person's watch). I politely say "nice watch. I was interested in one of those, as I really like the look of them. Settled on my DateJust (show him it). How do you like it?"

He has a funny look on his face and goes "oh, yeah, i like it." and then grabs his magazine and opens it up.

I just sat there and was like "oh...okay."

Second scenario: A guy from my town (not a lot of Rolexes in Nome) who I know is into "fine" things (more planes and such, but still). I see what appears to be a Sub on his wrist. I KNEW I should have taken more time to investigate before I open my mouth, but thinking i'm in a fellow Rolex owner's company, i say "Hey, is that a Rolex Sub?" Which prompts this LOOOOOONG story about how he saw a guy, who's band was too loose, and how he has this "tool" to punch the pins out. And he offers to fix that for the fellow, and it turned out that this watch the fellow had was a Rolex. And that Rolexes have screws for pins, that's how fancy Rolexes are. And then shows that his is an Invicta, which is "just as good". I nodded and said "nice", and made sure my sleeve was covering mine.

Same thing happened to me last week in New York City with my daughter visiting one of the surgeons I work with and I spotted his nurse wearing what I thought was a Daytona. It looked just like a Daytona - and when I asked her she said "it's a Fossil, it runs great and I didn't pay thousands for it" Geeez that ended my hopes of having a horology conversation with someone. I found that 90% of the time when I "thought" I was looking at a Rolex, it was not. So, now I just don't say anything.

I complimented a coworker on his U-boat. He then proudly told me that it wasn't real and that he has a bunch of others of other brands. I said, "Oh, that's cool," and never commented on anyone's watch again.

I don't spend much time in jewellery stores but I had to go to one recently to replace my trusty plastic Lorus that I wear when gardening. I was staggered by the range and variety of watches available in the 'up to $500. range'. Some of these are really nice looking watches, often look-alikes for Rolex models. The number of variations on a theme are absolutely staggering. Just as well I'm into Rolexes, as I wouldn't be able to choose from the variety available in the other brands. Makes identifying a watch on someones wrist very difficult unless you are up close and personal.

I agree that the Sub is a look that is often copied by other brands. However, the jubilee bracelet seems to pop up on many brands, too. Whenever I think I'm looking at a Date Just it ends up being a Citizen or something like that.

Except when thy say, oh thanks. I love it. It is an(insert brand name here other than Rolex). And then they say, I like you watch also, what is it? now, how do you feel answering, um,.....ROLEX.

I had that happen once at a bar.a very attractive woman sat next to me while I was waiting for my wife to arrive and conversation started. Did not know what brand watch she had on but it sparkled nicely with bezel stones and looked expensive. Well, I think it was a designer brand, maybe a Michelle. I commented bout it, she thanked me, then asked about mine. I had on a TT sub with slate SERTI dial. Man, it was uncomfortable having her gush that her watch was nothing compared to mine.

Also had two Different situations with two different people wearing ss daytonas. Once they were complimented on their respective watches, they never wore them that I saw again. I take that to mean the fake was busted.

With one, once complimented on his Daytona, he raved about his Mont Blanc watch he had at home.....
