Another vote for Nashville. If you stroll down Music Row you can see live music in every bar. The caliber of the live bands in Nashville is naturally much higher than other cities.

Never been to Nashville, but I would say go Nashville. Been to Memphis many times for business and besides Graceland or downtown Memphis there is not much there IMO. The BBQ is very good. I am not an Elvis fan so I didn't go see it and downtown area is about 3 blocks long that is nothing too special.

I've never been to Memphis so I can't comment.
I did go to Nashville about 2 years ago on business and enjoyed it very much.
I'd go back in a minute for a long weekend. It's a great city.

Yup. Nashville for country and Memphis for blues. I lived in Memphis for 25 years, so I can give you some pointers. PM me if that's your choice.

A local trucking company forbids their trucks to stops at Memphis truck stops for the night, too much crime and danger.
My wife and I went to Memphis to see Graceland a couple of years ago and I was appalled at the dirty run down condition of the town. We had intended to spend the night but decided against it.
We also went to Nashville and thoroughly enjoyed it.

...but Memphis has Elvis and the Peabody Ducks:)

Memphis really lost true Blues years ago. I would call Memphis's music scene as more rythym & blues as opposed to "the blues", think early and late BB King.

I think Nashville has more to do and would recommend it over Memphis for nightlife, variety etc. If you are looking for more laid-back atmosphere Memphis would fit the bill. Each place has own personality and advantages.

Let us know what you decide and recap.

I've played blues in Memphis many times over the years and although its been some time since my last gig there I found it a thriving blues scene.

You are correct that there is a thriving blues scene, but I think a more Rythym & Blues style has replaced the more Delta or country blues on Beale Street. I think most people think of hearing Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson as opposed to Robert Cray or BB's later sounds, although the later sounds I think may have wider more general mass appeal.

I only make this as observations when I visited over past 15 years, it may not be representative of all the time, but I usually found best delta blues in ad hoc jams at park in downtown area.

My two cents,

Chuck

Never been to Nashville but many times to Memphis my corporate office is there. As a weekend exercise Memphis would be fun but I suspect based on the local advice is grungier than Nashville which is more affluent. You could have a fun weekend on Beale St, Blues and Graceland, thereafter it is slim pickings but that would fill a weekend. Watching the Elvis faithfull make their pilgrimage to Graceland is worth the price of the trip alone, seeing a japanese with Lamb chops crying bringing flowers to the grave shows how big an impact he had on the world.

I have never been to Memphis so I can not give advise against going there. But I have been to Nashville and thoroughly enjoyed the city. I'm sure both destinations have attractions worth visiting and seeing so "takes your pick"!!!

I'm not a country or western music fan but while we were in Nashville in Aug, we went to the Grand Ole Opry and I really enjoyed it. Heck of a good show. We also toured the Carnton Plantation in Franklin....also highly recommended. While you're close, go to Lynchburg and tour Jack Daniels...rarely drink but we did the taste tour and enjoyed it also. Country music Hall of Fame - worth it also.
