Fragrances
I saw another thread on cologne/perfume, and I was a bit surprised at some of the things that people say they wear. Lots of what would be the equivalent of Casio and Timex (considered Designer fragrances). For example, I saw that someone mentioned Cool Water. That's like wearing Invicta's watch that looks like the Submariner (I have the Invicta on order, by the way, to see if I like the style. See my thread in the main forum). Cool Water is a blatent copy of Creed's Green Irish Tweed, and like a cheap copy of a Rolex, comes nowhere near the quality of the real thing.
Most would consider Creed to be the Rolex of fragrances (producing what are considered Niche fragrances). They're one of the oldest companies in the world, they were founded in 1760. My favorite fragrance is their Erolfa. It's basically the Yachtmaster of their line. It smells like the ocean, with some citrus notes. Apparently it's fairly difficult to copy because there isn't really anything close on the market. They have their main store in Paris, and from what I've heard, if you go to the exclusive up-stairs part of the store (no idea how to qualify for that privilege), you have to take off your shoes because it's carpeted with mink fur. So, does anyone else have any suggestions on how to smell good? |

Just because something is expensive though, doesn't mean it will be good. Fragrances on people are different than what is from the container. There's a dialog in the book "Stranger in a strange land" that I'll see if I can dig up. Covers this topic well.

At that point, you'd probably also smell like the steak you have pasted over your swollen left eye.

Trust me, pal....if anything's "swollen" after that encounter, it most certainly isn't my left eye!!

Classic British men's cologne:
Blenhiem Bouquet, Penhaligon's. Actually most Penhaligon's fragrances are outstanding. Penhaligon's tends towards perfume making as it was in the turn of the century, minus the whale products. Instead of smelling like every other can of drugstore aerosol deoderant, Penhaligon's crafts its scents in a traditional manner, so many of the results are built from natural products, not chemically derived. And you'll notice the difference from many modern, deriviative products. Molton Brown (also British) do great fragrances. Just my 2 C, Chris |

I just purchased a bottle of Burberry London. I like the way it smells and my wife approved.

The same cologne will smell differently on other people. I'm not too into fragrances...as long as you have your basic morning/afternoon along with an evening one, you can't go wrong.

I'm not very particular about cologne. I do believe that a man should not be smelled from a distance and for me that proximity is reserved for my wife.
Women's perfume should be barely worn in order that people nearby only get the slightest wisp of fragrance in the air as a woman passes and then disappear. Heavy perfumes that linger in the air should be reserved for outdoor events like Nascar or pig wrestling and such.

Skin Bracer by Mennen! The original formula. It stings when applied to a freshly shaved head. It feels good after the shock. I also like Old Spice and Ivory soap.

"Some might laugh at Old Spice but it is a classic that will never go out of style in my opinion."
You are absolutely right! Truly I like Old Spice. No Joke. I also like the smell of Barbasol. Almost all the time the only fagrance I have on is Ivory soap and Skin Bracer/or Old Spice (all depends on what I want to get at Wal-Mart after I run out of aftershave). Those smells are results of everyday grooming. |

When he was all done, he would but some Clubman talc on a brush and put it on the back of my neck. Nothing like it. Before he retired he gave me a hot towel shave. Now that's something you have to experience at least once in your life if you have the opportunity I also still wear Pinaud Clubman after shave on occasion

A great website for ordering Pinaud Clubman products. I've ordered from here before and had no problems.

I never knew what old time barbers use, but I remember the smell. All barbershops had that same smell. Gotta order some Clubman products. Real men smell like barbershops! |

Never had a hot towel shave, but did try to get on while in Vegas this year. Get this, the shop didn't open until 10am WTF, We were well under way by that time So spent the money on liquor instead

Most places don't do them now John because if the barber cuts you, there's a chance of them getting a blood disease if someone would have one. But if you ever get the chance, don't pass it up buddy

Who cares if someone wears Stetson and a Rolex? Or if they wear Millesime Imperial with an Invicta? Wear what you like, smell the way you like. No one cares if Cool Water is a homage to GIT,or if Unforgivable is a rip off of MI. Most people don't even care as long as you smell (relatively) good. What I think is "fake" is someone who wears a Rolex just to show off. Or someone who wears anything for that matter, such as Creed cologne, just to show off or brag to other people about how their colognes are "real" and how others are "fake" and all that other BS. These people are just as fake as the ones who wear the Folexes and the Coolwater.

I piled on Stetson back on high school 20 years ago. Had to smell good back then. For the girls, you know.
