Has anyone given you a hard time for your watch?
I'm sure this dosn't pertain to alot of people, but has anyone given you crap about owning an expensive watch? I'm rather young(18) and bought my first rolex earlier this year. I've wanted one since I was in the sixth grade and right when I graduated highschool I got a job working at U of M. Upon recieving my watch I was super excited and just wanted to show it off to the world, stupid me posts a pic on facebook and all I wrote was "loving my new rolex". To which many people replied quite negatively saying how I'm trying to be better than everyone, a moron for spending that much on a watch ect. I figured people thought I was being cocky online took down the picture and went on with my life. Up until a few weeks later I was at my friends house and his brother was giving me the same spiel that everyone gave me online. My friend asked to see it and his brother was there and he threw his $.02 and said that i'm a douchebag and how there are much better uses for the money(probably were). And now every time I go to put it on I think twice and sometimes i'll wear it but other times I don't. I love the watch and wear it to the mall and stuff, but don't wear it everyday as I really don't want to be hassled about financial deciscions i've made.(I paid cash for it, money was tight until the next paycheck but it wasn't a major financial setback.)
anyone have similar experiences? And all of this happening made me find this forum(which i spend 100x more time on than i do facebook) and noones judged me here yet for having to cheap of a rolex!!!(some of you are crazy rich or crazy stupid reguardless I love your fine time pieces!) |

No hassles. A few compliments. No matter what, i am always going to be very low key in any response I offer unless someone is being really obnoxious.
Sole exception might be if the other person is wearing a nice watch as well and wants to talk about it, but that's entirely different. |

I am the only person I know who has a rolex. I have gotten a little flack for it but when it comes from someone who just spent 50k on a truck that will be worth crap in 10 years I don't let it bother me. Everyone has different priorities.

"Haters gonna hate"
Shake it off and move on. Wear your watch with pride, you earned it and you're free to buy whatever you'd like.

Don't stress about it too much. A lot stems from jealousy. But I would personally avoid putting pictures on social networks, your always gonna get a negative reaction and it also gives people ideas that your a potential target for theft... Its rare someone at your age will compliment it as they will likely be jealous of it.

People just have different priorities/ passions in life. A friend on mine just bought a $3,000 bicycle and I will never understand why he needs such an expensive bike, just like some people don't understand why I need to own an expensive watch.
Move on and enjoy your watch. |

Most folks don't even notice my watch as it's SS. The rare comment I'll get is usually a compliment, but I have been given a hard time here and there for my watch. I have two times I can think about that someone had given me a hard time.
One was from a relative about a decade ago who thought I was spending money unwisely and thought I should invest my money instead or put it into a house instead of renting (I've since gotten married and bought a house all without selling my watch). I think he was just doing it out of concern and being helpful. I have a coworker who is into watches who took notice of my watch and made comments that I must have tons of money since I own a Rolex (which isn't the truth!!). Here and there if conversation ever comes up about watches he'll still mention that. At least we've since found a common watch we both like, G-Shocks. I'm not flashy and I don't shove the watch in people's faces. I prefer to keep it low key. I definitely would not post it on Facebook. That being said I enjoy my Rolex and it's worn almost every day. This forum is the only place I'll even openly talk about my watch with great enthusiasm. I'm guessing some of it comes out of jealousy from peers your age or some comes from concern that an 18 year old should be spending their money more wisely. Continue to wear your watch and enjoy it! |

You've earned, you can do whatever you want with your money. I wish I'd be as smart to buy a Rolex when I was 18yo.
Let your friend show you what have they bought for their money and I bet you'll see tons of useless crap. |

sounds like people are just jealous of something they aren't able to achieve. It sure is easy to shit on someone who has something better than you, especially when you're so young. Wear that watch proud. It's a symbol of your dedication and hard work. If you want something you go get it. That's what you did and you should be proud

but I figure anyone say in 40s that buys a luxury watch and has a mortgage they might be pretty stupid thats just my opinion,,,i see too many people spend money on cars, clothes jewellery ect and, they have a mortgage until they are in ther 50s or 60s that is a BAD idea i think unless you have a small mortgage just to take advantage of low interest rates and have a ton invested ect

Welcome to the great world we all live in. Luckily you've found the best forum on the planet! As a young entrepreneur I've always marched to the beat of a different drummer, but that's a topic for another thread. Enjoy the watch, and use your head with Facebook..plenty of haters.

It's all about values..... and values clearly change with age as do aspirations.
I bet if you posted a pic of some mega expensive trainers or sunglasses, or skateboard, or bike.....or whatever you guys lust after.... you'd get a completely different set of responses and experience....., Same with a cool sports car or motorbike..... It's just an age thing..... and people of your age just don't typically lust after expensive watches.... |

Just let ot roll of your back. Nothing wrong with owning an expensive watch if you can afford it.
In the future I wouldn't call attention to any luxury goods you acquire by posting it, although their was nothing wrong in sharing your excitement. |

I just wear it, and only tell you guys if I get something new.
My friends may notice a different watch, but I just say yeah got it a few months ago and leave it at that. |

I will go a step further and say post whatever you want. As stated above, people spend lots of cash on all sorts of things: guns, cars, food, watches, pens, coins, handbags. Who is anyone to question what someone else spends money on? Rolex has the fortunate position of being an icon. To most people to own a Rolex is to be rich. When people see that they either get jealous or have better ideas of how you should spend your money. I am screwed twice because I own a BMW and a Rolex. Neither was really expensive comparatively speaking but because both are status symbols I sometimes get defined by those things. I like when people do that because I remind them that I am serving my country to pay for my schooling, grew up in a blue collar town, and work a job where I help people everyday. I have learned to revel in appearances versus reality and you should do the same. As long as you are a good person people will recognize.
