Movement looks good.
I only have an issue with the dial, which is sold as just relumed instead of completely reprinted. |

Please explain the reprint....
Quote:
I am totally new to vintage Rolex submariners. Please tell me why you are sure this is a total reprint..if not I'm guessing the combo would be worth a small fortune. I contacted the seller and he told me that the dial had probably been relumed and that the hands were probably aftermarket. No mention of a re-dial. This looked like a great project for me , but I am grateful for having read this post prior to bidding best Todd p.s. also told me that the dial measured 27.7mm so I guess that fits a 6536-1 but not a 6536. Am I correct here? |

If you are interested then ask for a personal money-back guarantee if Rolex rejects it as fake.

This dial was lumed and clearly not relumed.
The dots are too regular. You should google 6536 dials and see the difference with the luming. I'm sure these glow in the dark. Also, the gilt prints are not correct, but I don't want to be too explicit, as I don't want to help the fakers to improve. Lastly, red/gilt subs are extremely rare. If you have one, why would you sell it on eBay... Btw, the crown and movement are correct and original. |

OK thanks for this. I contacted the seller late last night who told me he would meet me at any AD or other expert of my choosing (we live about 90 mins from each other) to authenticate the dial if I won the auction. He seemed genuinely surprised that the dial attracted so much attention and thought that the value was in the movement.. I spoke to him after the auction and he seemed amazed that it sold for over 3K. Anyway, based on a number of discussions with him he seemed like a righteous guy who was speaking based on what was told to him by his watchmaker, which was that the dial appeared to be an original re-lume. |

If you won this auction, you must be really cautious.
I'm afraid a lot of AD cannot identify if a gilt dial of that age is original or not. You must have some experience! Rolex HQ specialists in Geneva are very very experienced. I only trust them. Otherwise, I would be very very careful. For example, I went to a famous auction house in Geneva during the November auctions. I checked two vintage Subs, both of them had major issues (fake dial). When you meet with the seller, please take a UV torch and check if the lumes are glowing. I bet they will. Also, check the back of the dial, it should be black. Good luck! |

No, I didn't win. In hindsight I am glad, as I really don't have the experience necessary for that type of purchase. I'm much safer within my usual (IWC) and far less complicated brand. But thanks for the replies, it's really the education which is so invaluable here.. cheers Todd |
