Opinions needed
Hello,
I'm on the fence whether to get a omega planet ocean or rolex submariner, or hulk, or gmt master 2 . Do you think the rolex is worth thousands more than a po. Thanks in advance |

You're looking at this wrong...
The question is do you think that the Rolex is worth paying more for up front.. It will surely be worth more in the long run..

Maybe ask same question in the Omega forum and get a balanced set of conflicting opinions...
IMHO, get the Sub

Both the PO and Sub are well made with excellent movements, cases, and bracelets. However, the Sub is widely considered to be THE diver watch. It has a classic, iconic design and retains much of its intial value. If the Sub was the same price as the PO, which would you buy? The answer to that question is the watch you want.

Let me chime in =)
I have both the Rolex Submariner 114060 and the Omega PO 8500 42mm. and i can say that even though they are both diver's watches they are different in many ways. The Submariner has more "character" in my opinion, for a design that has been around for 50+ years it is and will always have the classic look. it has the right amount of bling (the polished ceramic bezel) yet has the conservative but robust look of a tool watch. the movement is considered bulletproof and has proven the test of time. rolex did a great facelift with the submarinerC and gmtIIC with the one of the most comfortable bracelet i have tried on and with the glide lock clasp of the submarinerC its easy to find a perfect fit with the watch on the wrist. The Omega Planet ocean on the other hand has a combination of classic design plus modern appeal in my eyes. it has a more modern movement that has a longer power reserve 60hrs and more innovations and research done on the watch. it has a matte finish ceramic bezel which makes it different from the rolex submariner. i love the "Helium" knob on the planet ocean that brings back the "old memories" of a divers watch, as my father used to say. yet everything about the watch says that its modern/new technology. for me it has the perfect balance of the past and the future. the Planet ocean wears higher on the wrist because of the clear case back and it is thicker too, but not much different than an AP diver would wear on ones wrist. (at least for the 42mm the 45mm PO is a different story.) its bracelet is also comfortable to wear but has no micro-adjustment like the submariner. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in your selection, both are great watches that are amazingly built and would last for many years to come. I wear both these two watches evenly but if we are splitting hairs I wear the submariner 1% more the the Planet Ocean. =) Remember that one man's perception of value varies per individual. Good luck in your choice. |

Thanks for the replies I'm just torn between choosing, i love the sub, I'm just trying to justify the price of a new one. When I see my dads 1980 rolex I amazed how the prices have skyrocketed lol.

I would consider buying the Sub second hand. Look for one in great condition with all of its extras, and you can put a dent in the price. Just my opinion.

Never buy a more affordable watch as a substitute for a more expensive watch because you will always pine for the other one. Eventually you'll sell the watch to help fund getting the one you wanted in the first place. Only get the PO if you truly like it more than the Sub. There are lots of people that love the new PO because of what it is, not because it's less money than the Sub. |

Ain't it the truth. It gets damn expensive too. If the Sub is what you want, put on your big boy pants and buy it. Then post some pics of it. You won't regret it.

Po vs Sub
I think this is one where you really need to get yourself to an AD and try these watches on your wrist. I had the 42mm PO 8500 and I had to flip it after I just could not get used to the weight as a daily beater. I persisted with it for a year as I really think that the planet ocean is a fantastic watch. I even bought the OEM rubber but that didn't help much either as the watch does sit high on the wrist.
Aesthetically it is stunning but it is a heavy watch, especially when compared with a 16610 or even a 116610 for that matter. I sold my PO and bought a G Serial 16610 and I could not be happier because the watch is fantastic and is most importantly, extremely comfortable to wear. If I could have afforded to keep the PO as a weekend watch I would have. If this watch is going to be your daily wearer, make sure you try that PO on as when it is on the wrist it you may then consider it not an option. Also, as a side note, you can now get Rubber B or everest straps to give you a more strap options to more easily compare with the PO. |

If you buy a used Rolex in near-new condition, it's got (at worst) a couple of fine scratches you'd probably pick up in month. If they bug you, have it serviced. It will truely be like new and you'll still be ahead a couple of grand. This wipes out most of the PO's price advantage. Unless of course you bought a used PO. . . |

I have a Omega 42mm PO and love it. I also have a 116610 sub and love it. It depends on what you like and whether you are buying the watch as an investment. I started with the PO 3 years ago as the first watch in my collection and bought it based on looks and cost .I thought it was going to be my only high end watch.I now have 4 high end watches in my collection. At the time the PO was less than half the cost of all of the Rolex models you mentioned. The Rolex should always retain a higher value. You can always buy more than one!

I bought an Omega Seamaster "Bond" about 15 years ago after going through the same dilemma. I posted on Timezone for people's opinions and got pro-Rolex from Rolex fans and pro-Omega from Omega fans, as well as balanced opinions from both. I bought the Omega, mostly because I couldn't afford the Sub. (Really, I couldn't afford the Omega either, but that's another story.)
Now, 15 years later, I'm spending my free time on TRF looking for a Sub. All the good things about the Omega are still true; it's solid, runs to COSC spec without ever having been serviced, and is my most comfortable watch. And all the things I worried about back then are still nagging me; the design is not nearly as timeless as the Sub, it doesn't satisfy my inner 5-year old who still visualizes a Sub when he hears the word "watch," and ultimately, it was a compromise and not what I wanted. If you can afford it, get what you want. If you didn't think the Rolex was worth the extra money, you wouldn't be here asking what we thought. Here's an exercise I use in similar situations: Get a friend who is neutral to tell you which one you should get (not a discussion, just blurt one out) and see if you feel disappointed. Good luck! |

I agree with the opinion of buy what you want the first time and I would go pre owned to save a little loot.
