restoring a 6238

I'm currently restoring my father's 6238. This model is the predisesor to the Daytona. The photo below is what the watch looks like.

From what I've read, it's a rare watch. The salesman at the AD had never seen this model. Does anyone know what this watch is worth? I have seen ranges from 27K to 40K.

I can't tell you what it's worth, but just looking at the photo, I am not sure it needs any restoration. It looks great as is. Perhaps its worth sending to RSC for service.

Wear it in good health.

cheers

The pic looks good. Why does it need restoring? Movement service? I would leave it as is. Value, I'll say $20K-$30K as the Daytona(outer tach bezel) models are more in vogue and demand.

Whoa! That Rolex is - potentially! - worth 100 K.!

I cannot guarantee that you will get 100 K for that watch, but one similar to it sold for 100 K recently.

A member here, "SadZoe", sold her husband's pre Daytona for that amount.

But the price she got was also quite exceptional!

Here are the threads about it:

"Help with 1966 Daytona Chronograph"! CLICK!

"black dial 6238 from the 60's remember me?" CLICK!

Problem with having it serviced could be that RSC would simply refuse to service it since it is too old! Sad but true!

Anyway, sometimes - like with watches like your father's and if you/he want(-s) to resell it - it is better to leave it as it is instead of "overdoing" service since ANY alteration to its original specifications would have a dramatic effect on its value.

Oh, btw.:

George Lazenby wore a pre-Daytona EXACTLY like yours in the James Bond movie "In Her Majesty's Secret Service".

That photo is not of my watch. I dropped it off before I found this site. It stopped running some years ago, and he never got it fix.

The AD I took it to to get an estimate told me that their Rolex technician received an award that Rolex only gives to one person per country per year. Does anyone know about such an award?
