Ways I have damaged a watch
In honor of my new TRF pal who just bought his very first Rolex, I though it would be good for us to collectively warn him about the worldly dangers that lurk for our watches. I shall begin:
Gasoline/Petrol/Solvents While filling my car with fuel, the petrol splashed back onto the watch and melted the water seals. Not a cheap fix. Now I ALWAYS have my watch arm behind my back when at the pumps. |

I went to catch a horse someone had fallen off.
It spun round and gave me both barrels in the chest. I managed to get my left arm up to protect myself and ended up with a broken arm, three broken ribs and a broken spring bar. Fortunately I saw the watch fall and put it in my pocket before I dove myself to A&E.

I certainly saw it coming! A foot or two higher and it would have take my bloody head off! (though then my watch would behave been ok!)

Let me count the ways
Distance running with a sub date and hitting it against a bridge support column with an arm swing near Balboa Park in San Diego. It chipped the crystal.
I stopped running with my sub after that and started to use a Timex Ironman which I have hit countless times with my armswing (sign posts, light poles, etc., etc.) plus two falls while running in the dark and two dog bites. Of course this was over about 90,000 miles of running, 5 Marathons, countless 5 and 10Ks and 1/2 Marathons, and national, state, and So. Cal. Cross Country college team championships (I'm 66 now and starting running in high school at age 16). The stories I could tell. :) |

Friendly fire from another Rolex!
My wife was wearing her datejust, me my sub c. We had guests over and I offered a drink to one of them. Being the gracious hosts we are and through some act of fate, my wife and I reached for the same glass with our left hands at the same time. There was a clash of metal on metal followed by a feeling of dread. The end result was an indentation on the side of the case of my sub and an unscathed datejust. |

If you'd both had Smurfs it would have be a "blue on blue engagement"!
Sorry, I'll get my coat...

Seat belt attack...
Removing my seat belt with my right hand always seems to bring the seat belt (male piece) very close to scratching my stainless steel watch on my left hand....
Several times I have heard a "clinc" sound, but no visible damage yet...

Reaching into a backpack with metal zip.
While traveling, at the airport I partially unzipped the metal zip my backpack to grab my passport. Reached in with my left hand to grab it. Deep enough that my DSSD was 'submerged' or fully inside, the backpack. I was careful enough that when I put my hand in, the deadly metal zipper teeth made no contact with my watch. But as I went to pull my passport & boarding pass out of the bag in a hurry... On its way out, the bracelet fell victim to the backpack's deadly jaws... the bracelet brushed against its deadly metal zipper teeth, and made massive 'teeth' scratch marks on the gorgeous SS clasp and bracelet! |

Walls and taking a photo.
While taking a photo with a DLSR camera one day, for extra stability, I leaned up against a stone brick wall. I leant my left arm (with watch) against the wall, and my watch (Omega Speedy Pro Moonwatch at the time) was the hand that was supporting and zooming the lens as well. This hand got too close to the brick wall, without me realising and without me seeing (after all, my face was glued to the camera), and I ended up scratching the acrylic Hesalite crystal against the wall. Made a series of very large, very deep scratches on this crystal. Lucky it missed the case, as the crystal was very easily and cheaply replaced by The Swatch Group service centre afterwards. |

Desk diving and walking down hallways and crowded sidewalks, especially with walls or railings near by. It's amazing how swirls and light scratches appear on platinum and gold watches.

I put some scratches on my clasp piece while asleep on a plane.
I was sleeping on the plane and had my arms down in front of me with my fingers linked together between my legs. I didn't realise until after the flight that my watch must have been resting on the buckle of the seatbelt and rubbing against it every time I moved. It was a very liberating experience to see the marks on the watch |

My office desk the edge always scratches the band. My Breitling 6.75 Bentley always scratched the paint on the cars in the showroom if I was walking to close, that bezel was like a cheese grater.

Same. I damaged my Bulgari this way. And also walls, and metal frame of chairs.
Great! That means the Datejust is tougher than the Sub! |

Playful dogs who like to nip and scratch.
Zippers on jacket pockets and just about anything else you reach into.

I like the idea of this thread.
Let's keep it going! I'd hate harming my new bought baby and this thread gives a good insight of what to look out for! |
