Newbie question
A friend has offered to sell me his Pam 287. I always kind of liked the Panerai's but am more of a Rolex guy. I wouldn't mind a larger timepiece and the price seems OK, but I lack knowledge. It is a "J". When was this made and what is a reasonable price. He asked me to make an offer. The band is a bit worn and I would want to replace it. Otherwise, the watch is in good condition. I see these new for in the $6500 range. Not sure if he has the complete boxes and papers or not.

It isn't a super popular model (not saying bad, just not "enthusiast").
Here is a good place to research prices. http://www.watchrecon.com/?query=pam+287

I would do a little more research before jumping into it. Panerais generally look the same, but you'll notice the subtle differences if you spend more time looking. I think you would be better off finding the right Panerai for you instead of just getting a Panerai that may be convenient to get.

Not pretending I know your situation but I would tell your friend to give you a price and you can decide if you want it or not. I was in a similar situation before and when I made the offer I thought was right on target, my friend was offended at the offer. Anyways, just my 2 cents. Plus research the different models so you can get one that you can easily flip if you find out you don't like it.

I prefer the Luminor case over the Radiomir, but the 287 is nice.
