I am old fashioned and will not go near a ceramic watch. I will always prefer steel even pvd or dlc is ok with me, but not ceramic no way no embrace here.

Good read. Thanks for sharing. Guess that makes Rado a trend setter all those years ago huh?

It's a debatable topic as far as lightness and trends go...maybe we'll get there after all the gold and platinum is in ETF vaults somewhere.

...but I just keep remembering something I heard years ago, "just because you can do it doesn't mean you should."

I used to wear a Rado for almost 10 years before getting my watch craze on.

That Rado is still in use (gave it to my mother) and there's not one scratch or mark on it.

Funny enough it seems like Rado was the big trend setter!

Yes agree way back in the 1960s Rado made the first all ceramic watch, but today many are jumping on the latest ceramic bandwagon fashion. But with what some charge for just a slither on thin ceramic with a fancy sounding name,is bordering on the ridiculous for what it is.

Rolex trends:
here is what we are seeing
the market for the new Ceramic model Rolex watches is still very hot and in short supply, demand exceeds supply, especially still for the new Rolex Deep Sea.
Men's YachtMaster watches have gotten soft
Women bought over 20% more men's watches this year than last with us
White Gold Presidents - supply exceeds demand a little

In a decade we'll see a lot of ceramic watches, maybe even from rolex.

As far as... "If it ain't broke..." High performance ceramics seriously outperform steel from a materials standpoint. It's true that steel ain't broke but nostalgia shouldn't inhibit progress.

Is this really progress? As Peter noted, Rado has been at this game since the Sixties and it seems that literally no one bothered to tag along until very recently.

I used to know a guy who had a fully ceramic Rado and I have to admit that it was quite fetching, but I could never see myself wearing one. It looked good on him, as he was a suit and tie kind of guy.

As for now and the brands who are getting on the bandwagon, I'm just not that impressed and even worse the watches seem to be getting even bigger and I'm not into bigger watches. To me, it seems more like just creating novelty in an industry that knows that the ice, while okay for now, could get might thin in a big hurry.

Maybe this is all for the best. When I feel like the time is right, I'll get my Speedy Pro and simply retire from the watch hobby and just lurk and watch what will happen next.

some of these "newfangled" ceramics are quite stunning, IMHO.

If I had unlimited or abundant disposable income, ceramic watches might be in my collection. But since this is not the case for me, any watch that I spend over $500 dollars on had better be able to withstand a good smack against a door frame!
