Please help: 1985 DJ 16014 legit?
Hi guys, extreme newbie in Australia here.
I'm thinking (keen) to plunge in and purchase my first DJ. This one is my birth year (I've been waiting AGES for the right one to come up) - and seems to tick all the boxes. I know, I know - ebay bad. Sometimes. I've to'd and fro'd with the seller re: authenticity, guarantee, parts etc. Basically he's said get it looked at in Australia and if it's not legit he'll refund it. Obviously, converting words to action can be hard though. So...I'd be most grateful if some of you more wiser hands could cast your eyes over the pictures and let me know what you think, especially if something looks awry. Thanks heaps; and apologies if I'm breaking any rules asking for help in my first ever post! Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1985s-ROL...#ht_785wt_1037 |

Well pictures are just pictures he has good feed back and have sold quite a few Rolex and other watches so always buy the seller and not the pictures..

Even though I have owned and looked at a lot of watches I'm no expert. But to me it looks like a very nice watch . Case is nice with nice lugs original dial the bracelet can't tell in the photos how the condition it's in. I like the watch a lot. Find out when it was last serviced because that can cost 600- 800 by rolex or around 400 thru non rolex repair. Good luck I think you have a winner! Ebay is fine but do your home work and it looks like you are. Trusted sellers is not the end all.

Thanks heaps for your guidance guys, I appreciate it. Not sure on the bracelet; that and a question re: servicing (asking for a cert) were the q's I just fired off to him...I didn't want to give him 20 all at once!!
Solid points re: buy the seller and sleeping well at night! Good day to you all. |

A agree with "buy the seller", and this one looks just fine.
100% positive feedback, almost all comparable watches, and don't forget ebay now has a Buyer Protection Plan that is essentially a full money-back guarantee. I know it's "cool" to bash the 'bay, but if I was in the market for a watch like this I would bid on this one.

Looks good to me. No way to confirm Jubilee isn't aftermarket, but does it really matter to you?

Fair call on not being able to confirm jubilee isn't aftermarket. I did ask him if it was all 100% original Rolex and he said it was. I also told him if I was successful I'd be getting it checked out pronto pronto...so hopefully - combined with buyer protection - it should be ok.
Time will tell! Will keep you all updated. |

My main concern would be that it is coming from Hong Kong.

you cannot see the clasp or band to confirm its authentic, but it looks ok overall, as an aussie also, be prepared for approx 10% import duty + customs fees on top of the purchase price, just something to consider ok.

The band look OK, although the rounded edges of the small center links leads me to believe it has been buffed.
The brushed finish in the center of the case back also looks as if it has been redone. The whole watch has probably been polished but I still think it is OK.

Welcome to TRF!
You're doing well to ask the questions of the seller well ahead of bidding/winning. Plus checking with outside resources. eBay buyer protection is something that does help you in case anything is worrisome if you win and it doesn't check out. Have an experienced, certified watchmaker or an AD do the verification. And suggest opening the package with them witnessing it. That may sound overly protective, but eliminates the time gap when it was in your possession, but before you had it checked.

Welcome to the forum! Looks like a nice piece. I guess there will always be that uncertainty until its finally on your wrist. So buyer protection and seller statements will count if it goes south. My only suggestion is to keep communication using the ebay system. That helps when ebay intervention is required. GLWS!

Hi guys,
Thanks again for all your posts and warm welcomes. For info, I didn't end up taking the plunge; the seller didn't answer some of my questions/respond to my messages after the 1st one. I guess when you've got a feeding frenzy on your watch and someone's hassling you with questions you don't really care if you lose one buyer...legit product or not. Thus, I remain...Rolexless. I'll get there! Thanks again - happy hunting. |

I would only purchase from U.S.! But that's just me buying and selling on E-bay for over 14 years now. I have learned from my mistakes early on.
