Hulk is Ugly . . .

All the recent love for the Hulk made me recall an AD encounter at a Las Vegas store when the watch first came out. The salesmen were rolling their eyes and actually laughing at the watch, lamenting that no one in their right mind would buy such a thing. The manager of the store whispered to me that it was just "ugly."

Well, I guess they were wrong:)

people don't usually like 'drastic' changes to something so iconic -- it takes a tad bit of time before it get appreciated... well that didn't happen for the new coke though....

personally i like the black bezel over the green.

Yeah, and some people thought that the iPad is a stupid idea and laughed at that when Jobs announced that...

markets/wants/needs are usually created... people usually don't know what they need/want until something is invented.

i'm pretty sure when the 'wheel' was invented the cave people scoffed at the idea...

I find the color green a unusual color for a divers watch???? it would fit better on a land watch like the GMT. Blue, black, Orange, yellow, etc are all dive colors.

When it was first released, I thought it was hideous from the Basel press release pics.
Not long after, I saw one first hand and next thing I knew, I was meeting up with DavidSW.
One of the most unique and best looking watches imo..

The physics of color underwater...

Green will begin to look like gray when a diver is at >20 meters making legibility quite poor. Orange is even worse. It will look like light gray by about >10 meters. Yellow says bye, bye at about >15 meters an looks off-white. Even Blue begins to look like dark gray by >30 meters. Dive watches are black and white for very functional reasons. It is about contrast, legibility and not anything else.

Rolex has taken their functional icon and turned it into an exclusive fashion novelty in my opinion to drive sales. Whether one likes how it looks is a matter of personal taste. My AD told me that they are very much in demand and that he can't get enough of them. I am guessing <1% of Submariners sold are ever used by divers. The watch model has become a cultural status icon that is now just a water resistant sports watch like the Daytona, Explorer, GMT and Milgaus. The diver's bezel is now just a decoration.

It's not my cup of tea, but if it makes an owner smile; that's what it's all about.

My $.02

My opinion on the hulk is that it is in no way ugly. Is it to everyone's taste ? No. Saying that most watches that will get you universal approval are not going to be very interesting watches. The further away from normal you shift, the more interesting things become. They also become more likely to be disliked.

When it comes down to watches I plan on owning four sports models. A Sub, A DJII, an AP RO and a Nautilus. I think you need a few other watches when you own the LV because it doesn't match every situation. I will never exchange my sub because it has setimental value but something tells me that when (if?) I have all four, I will regret that my Sub isn't the more interesting LV. On the other hand right now I wear my sub everyday so I'm very glad it's black.
;-)

Your information is not accurate Bob. Research dive watches or Doxa and you will discover that in the late 1960's Doxa hired a team of engineers along with divers to determine what color would be best for a dive watch underwater and ORANGE was determined to be the most visible!

Why do you think so many watch manufactures make orange dive watches?

As to the Hulk, it's not on my wanted list but happy for those who are enjoying theirs. I do think Rolex watches with green are hot...when you throw a splash of YG in the mix!

Strange... the only really obvious difference over the previous version is that the dial is green
