Hey everyone...

My 30th birthday and wedding are coming up in September. I am looking to purchase a vintage Rolex for my birthday, and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what to look for. I was thinking Datejust for the price point, but could be open to other suggestions! Ideally I would want to try to find something from late 1983.

Most of the usual suspects should be available, but the DJ's will almost certainly be the easiest to find, have the most options available and offer plenty of different prices/conditions.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Many here purchase a submariner as as first purchase. Yes, it's slightly more money, but the submariner is just a classic perfect watch. I own a 1984 submariner, I think it's incredible...

You can't go wrong with a datejust either, lower price point, very comfortable watch with lots of dial color options... Here is the blue dial 1971 Datejust I recently purchased...

Do some research and figure out what is best for in terms of Rolex: GMT, SUb, Explorer, Datejust, etc...

Thanks guys. Yeah, I have a little time. I already have a Breitling so I don't think a DJ would be the way to go. I think from the research I've done I know what serial numbers I would be looking for, but does anyone know for sure?

I'm in the same shoe. I'm 30 this month I have a brand new GMT2c but I want something from 1983 so we can grow old together. What would be the best day to day wearer? (preferably on oyster bracelet)

Sub or Daytona if u got the cash. Daytona in 83 was still the small Val. 727 manual wind.
I prefer something older really than in my year I was born in 78 but prefer pre 72 Subs or Gmts.

If your born in 83 I would say something that matches the era like a trans matte dial 16800.

How about a nice GMT 16750 or 16753. The 16753 still has a nipple dial and the 16750 has a matt dial. Nice vintage look and it's quickset.

Here are mine. The 16750 is 7.4 mil and the 16753 is 8.4 mil.

Such a Daytona is NOT for daily wearer. I had one and had to change 3 times the crown and neck threads due to wear, unscrew wind - screw again.

If you like it, you get one, but keep this piece of info in mind.

I like the GMT or Sub for a watch from 1983. Also, with a vintage watch, please don't be expecting a 30 year old watch to regulate as tightly as a newer rolex. have fun!

Thanks for the replies, guys. Now it is just time to start the searching. Always seems that stuff is for sale when I dont want it, but whenever I do, there is nothing around.

Consider a 5513 from 83. It'll be a mk3 maxi. I bought one as a daily wearer and to save my red 1680 from getting beat up and I have to say, I like it as much as my red. There's something mystical about a non date sub and it really captivates me. Never once did I think I would love that watch as much as I do.

Yeah, I was leaning towards something on the dressier side, without breaking the bank. 30th Birthday is 2 days after the wedding...

My birth year watch is a 36mm DayDate. You can also, if you want dressier for a woman, a man's or woman's Cellini is always a nice choice. Not all women like subs/GMTs for a daily wear watch. I know that's blasphemy, but there you go :-).
