Is the upgraded version a lot more efficient then the standard HAM radio?

I noticed that the BEEF radio cost a lot more, is it worth it?

But if Peter deigns to reply, I do wonder what he thinks about the many Internet remote control amateur radio stations available to people.

I have used some EU ones strictly as a SWL during emergency ops in our hemisphere to stay in touch with real-time activity. With our increasingly stricter new antenna restrictions in the US, might such "shared infrastructure" be a good thing?

Ham Radio, also known as Amateur Radio is a quite a popular hobby and a service in which licensed participants operate communications equipment with a deep appreciation of the radio art and don't need to be mocked with above quote IMHO. This is quite a unique hobby but Amateur Radio it can be a mixture of fun, public service, and also serves in world wide disasters when other sorts of communication fail. Although most hams {amateurs} get involved for many reasons, they all have something in common a basic knowledge of RF technology and operating principles and skills. And all got to study and pass an examination for a license to operate on radio frequencies known as the Amateur Bands for whatever country you live in. These bands are radio frequencies reserved by and for use by all licensed hams {amateurs} at intervals from just above the AM broadcast band all the way up into extremely high microwave frequencies.And on these bands we use AM.FM,VHF,UHF,SSB,Dstar, plus many digital modes, and now operate nodes via Internet.Ham Radio is simply known as Amateur Radio no matter what the radio is, its a popular hobby and a service in which licensed participants operate communications equipment with a deep appreciation of the use of RF communication and its not a joking matter..

I'm glad to see that there are some HAMs out here. Out here in Nome we have a set up of relay stations that cover the Seward Peninsula (some members are VERY active and knowledgable). It has saved countless lives over it's tenure. I'm a proud member of SPARC (Seward Peninsula Amatuer Radio Club), and it's abilities are awesome. I can be out in the middle of nowhere, just have to turn my handheld to whichever repeater and I can phone patch anyone I want, or find out what the weather is like 100 miles away before I travel (very dangerous out here in the middle of nowhere).

I've been a ham radio operator for 25 years, it has been an enjoyable hobby that has so many facets you can get involved with. It has even opened job opportunities for me. Peter's post pretty much sums the hobby up. To me, there is definitely a certain 'magic' to it all. Also like watch collecting, it can easily become an expensive hobby!

Have to agree but like all hobbies you can make them as expensive as you can afford.The magic to me is when you send out a CQ call you never know who will answer your call. It could be another HAM local or other parts of Europe, or a Ham [amateur] from the other side of the world.And over the years made many friends world wide some I communicate daily when propagation allows.
