A visit to Fashion Island, Newport Beach, Ca., Rolex

While on a combined business and vacation trip to Newport Beach, Ca., I decided to visit the AD at Fashion Island where new Rolex watches are sold. The AD let me try on the Prince ($34,000) but changed the subject when I asked to try on the Platinum DD that sells for $60,000+ then I compared it and it was almost the exact same watch as an 18k yellow gold DD for $36,000 and the AD said that the movement is the same. With platinum being almost the same price now as gold, I'm not convinced that a platinum DD is worth almost twice as much as a yellow gold DD.

I know that platinum is more durable. The AD told me that in the late 80s a platinum DD sold for 1/10 of what it is selling for now. It is crazy how this market has no logic to it.

platinum still does sell less than gold on a weight based exchange, its just VERY difficult metal to make a watch out of and it is the cost of craftsman ship u will be paying for when buying platinum AND the weight =)

Wooha, a Platinum DD for 6k in the late eighties.

Why didn't I buy a bunch of them back then?

Oh I just remembered, they were around 25k.

You're right. There is no logic to it.

Nevertheless, people like us will continue to hand over our money for watches we like.

This is why Rolex uses terms like Platinum and gold on there ceramic inserts simply because they sound expensive to match the crazy prices.

I think the price is high for the Plat. because the nature of the metal is hard to mill and stamp. A lot more time is spent in the making of the watch compared to the soft 18k gold.

Not only is Platinum harder to work with compared to Gold, Platinum content in Rolex watches is 95% with 5% alloys while Current Rolex Gold content is 75% Gold with 25% alloys.

Cheers

Correction, the Prince I tried on was $16,000 the rose gold DD that I was looking at was $34,000 and the Platinum was over $60,000.

I was not sufficiently impressed with the new Prince to even remotely thinking of paying over $10,000 for it with a leather strap no less. I'd rather have a mint condition vintage Prince for that kind of money.

Actually .95 platinum has a lower HRV rating than 18k gold.

I saw one a Prince in the For Sale forum...I like the look of that watch. Not a fan of the leather strap, but I sure like the look of the Prince (especially for a change up watch)!!!!
