Regulation: What is the range of adjustment?

Out of curiosity, what is the likely range of regulation for adjusting a watch? I imagine each movement allows you to adjust a different amount, but what is a typical range? In other words, from how slow to fast can a watch be easily adjusted? Just curious...

Thx.

.

Microstella on 3135 allows for +/- 150 secs/day adjustment.

Would anyone find something that were running 25-30 seconds fast/day troubling?

Today regulation is a very very simple task for any good watchmaker, its accomplished by turning the Microstella adjustment screws and nuts. The two smaller Microstella screws make adjustments of one second for each turn, and the larger Microstella, two seconds for one turn, but rate adjustment on the balance wheel its around a max of around 150 seconds either way.And you need a microstella special tool and a timing machine although its quite a easy job if not skilled best left to the professionals

The watch would never leave the factory OR the RSC OR a competent watchmaker's bench running at that rate. So the question arises, WHY is it running that fast? What has changed since the service that now causes it to run fast?

Often depleted lubricant on the balance jewels limits the range of balance wheel travel, resulting in lower amplitude. Since the balance wheel is covering less distance, it effectively oscillates more rapidly. This can lead to the +25/30 seconds per day rate you indicate.

The rate is not fast enough to be caused by magnetism, so possibly an indicator that it is time for a service.
