Milgauss

Ok I need a little help on this one.

What is so special about this watch? I'm sure I could search the web a find out but I appreciate your opinions more so.

Thanks in advance.

There is quite a bit written about this watch on the forum. You can do a search for "milgauss" and you will get a lot of replies.
However, it is a watch that has been around for quite a number of years. It has just been re-released with a new movement, case, bracelet etc. The anniversary model has a green tinted sapphire crystal that looks quite alluring or at least interesting.

I was told that "if you can find it, this one is going for $12,500".

Basically, what makes the Milgauss special is the highly anti-magnetic case construction (two casebacks and a Faraday cage that protects the movememt from the influence of magnetic fields of up to 1,000 Gauss (0,1 Tesla). The Parachrom Blue hairspring adds to great anti-magnetic properties:

Rolex made a highly anti-magnetic watch earlier, the Oyster Quartz, that was anti-magnetic to 1,000 Oersted.

Design-wise, the new Milgauss is special in as much as it has a green-edged crystal (the GV version = Glasse Verte). Also there are orange 3, 6 and 9 markers and Milgauss writing on the GV. The lightning bolt hand (orange, too) is a reminiscent of the lightning bolt hand that you also found on the early, now discontinued Milgauss models.

You are a gem! The original Milgauss started out as a less than stellar watch (like the Daytona). Now they are very sought after.

it seems to be a highly over hyped watch based on the reputation of the early predecessor. i personally find little attractive about it and don't find it interesting in form or function. some out there do like it and that's what makes this hobby so much fun. beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder. i'm not going to get this watch and i can't understand for the life of me why anyone would pay the outrageous dollars some of the sellers are asking. the market is a curious place.

Really I cant see any reason to own this watch unless you are a radar tech or a doctor that works very close to some kind of imaging machine. Is there a differant reason? Maybe I just dont understand.

There going to be fewer of them naturally due to the limited market of people who need this kind of watch.....a scarcity borne of reality, and not of the kind of purposeful scarcity created by Rolex to increase the interest in the SS Daytona...a very nice watch, but hardly worth the hype when compared to all the other worthy candidates. But we are in a world of myth and symbol and the convergence of both into icons. For some this beautiful Milgauss will become an icon, but I doubt that Rolex will push it like it has the SS Daytona which is such a transparent ploy.
