Rolex Submariner 1680 (1980) is vintage?

That's the question...

Do you think that a 30 + y/o watch could not be vintage?

Of course it is.

6m serial + acrylic crystal + matt dial + no white gold surrounds + lug holes + end links + patina + silver date wheel = vintage

Puff, I'm confused again! What about all the white date wheel Rolexes that preceded the silver date wheels. (Silver date wheels started to appear after the mid 1970's in the Subs and GMT's)

I also like the sapphire crystal, matte-dialed Submariners, model 16800, and consider it vintage as well as the acrylic crystal GMT 16750 with gold surround markers. My rule-of-thumb now is vintage should be 30-years-old, or very close.

IMHO any four number model would be vintage.

anything with a matte dial is vintage. non-matte 16800s and 16750s are toss ups.

What about five-digit models with acrylic crystals? I'd say those are vintage, too, but agree it's debatable.

Anything is vintage. By definition it means of a certain year. The English language has given it a second meaning of old or classic.

How about an Oyster Perpetual Date 15000 model, purchased in 1987, with an acrylic dial, would that be classed as vintage?

BTW - Great forum, lots of helpful advice and interesting topics!

This is my rule of thumb as well for Rolex. If it came originally with a matte dial when it shipped from Rolex (whether it has a replacement gloss dial or not) it is classified as vintage.

Tudor's are more difficult to judge. Especially Subs as they had matte dials and acrylic crystals all the way into the 90's. FOr those I'd say lollipop hand 76100 and earlier are vintage.
