Fed up with this Rolex Tosh
Don't know about you guys, but I get a bit fed up with all the crap surrounding Rolex Products. Let me explain my thoughts
1) Rolex are not some high and mighty giant, they are a very good watch manufacturer who need to sell their products to us the general public. 2) After speaking to my AD in the UK who have been a Rolex retailer since 1965 stated Rolex like other high end manufacturers do not encourage discounting, indeed if an AD is seen to advertise reduced prices as some retailers do with other brands then there agency can be removed as indeed happened in my area a number of years back. If a retailer wishes to give there buyer /client an incentive or gesture by way of money taken off then this is down to the retailers discretion and would naturally come out of their mark up. However discounting of Rolex watches is neither supported or encouraged by the brand. 3) If a BNIB is resold by a grey dealer, as long as the warranty is correctly dated and stamped by the orginal retailer that Rolex supplied the watch to, the warranty is still honoured. 4) Keeping the green hologram on the watch can cause a build a of bacteria and the moisture build up underneath the sticker may cause an issue with the metal. 5) The only reason Rolex is quiet and keeps things close to it's chest is purely as a result of industry hijacking, and marketing surprise. 6) Rolex do not make the best watch imo, but they are damn good. 7) People complain about the prices - well you don't have to buy one. 8) People complain about AD's, you are doing them the favour by buying from them, they should bend over back wards for you. If not then. a. Write to there head office complaining b. Rolex state there AD's are specially selected because of the service they can provide - so if it's not up to par, then write to Rolex directly with your issue. c. Simply don't buy from them, and slag them of to all an sundry. 9. If when buying a Rolex you come across imperfections, obviously don't buy the watch concerned, but also write to Rolex asking them why a watch left the factory in such a condiditon. I often wonder how many people actually write and complain directly to Rolex or feedback to them. But at the end of the day, nothing floats my boat at this moment than a Rolex tool watch.

Define "best watch." I hear this all the time, but nobody ever states what criteria they use to determine what is and is not the best watch. IMO, the best watch is the one that does it for you at that time.

As you say the term "what is the best watch" is a question that really can't be answered. I have friends who insist there Casio G Shock is the best thing since sliced bread. Its all relative. I've never had the desire to own PP, Cartier, etc etc. I like the Rolex design and the longivity of the design. Have to say the best service I ever experienced was in a Cartier boutique. I did not buy, but they could not do enough for me.

I do love the Rolex watches but there are quite a few other things about the "Rolex thing" that grind my gears.

Its all pretty much a scam. I walked into Mayors here in Miami to buy a Daytona. I knew what to expect. In the past I was made aware of a five year waiting list. This time I was told that not only could I not get the watch but they were no longer taking names for a waiting list. So I said to the guy "so how do I get one?" He said "You cant!" At the time the daytona retailed for about 6500 and the yachtmaster was about 7500. But we all know that the daytona is the more prestigious watch to own. So what Mayors does is sell the Daytonas out of the back door for a large markup to the grey market and then the grey market sells them to us with more of a markup. Thats why we are paying 10k for a stainless steel watch from grey dealer. It sucks but you gotta pay to play!!!!!

Personally, I think we are living during a time of an amazing variety of brands who make mechanical watches, many of which are quite special. Rolex is one of many brands doing very fine work right now and all of us are their fans. My guess is that this industry will likely diminish in the next 50 years--even though I would wish this wouldn't happen.
My best guess is that the Windows OS I am using today will be completely outmoded dinosaur by that time, a mere footnote in history books. We should be happy about the variety and wonderful competence that the current group of watch manufacturers currently offer us. |

I have a feeling mechanical watches are going to be around for a long time to come. There's just too much about them that's appealing, that I just don't see them fading away. If they can survive the quartz revolution of many years ago, I think they can survive just about anything.

I look at Rolex the way I look at Porsche - in both cases, the ADs are slaves to a self-important and money-grubbing company, but the products are superb (in finish, form and function) and they are the only luxury brands that you can beat the ever-living cr@p out of and they still retain their prestige and their finish, form and function.
Rolex is the watch you can wear ANYWHERE to do ANYTHING - no Patek, Ulyses, Brueget or VC will put up with the punishment you can give to a Rolex. Just like no Lamborghini, Ferarri, Maseratti or Astin Martin can take the punishment a Porsche can. That's why they are the best - and I mean the absolute best - value for the money, even though they seem so d@mn overpriced. And that is why they have, and they deserve, the reputation that made them the premier manufacturers they are. |

To be fair though, Jon never actually said that the watches were crap (but send my those 'crap' watches anyway ).

I found this thread to be most interesting, now can you tell me Jon, the definition of 'Tosh'. 'Tosh, now, young man go to bed?' or 'Tosh, that's a lot of nonsense!'
Yes, 'Tosh', all this talk about Rolex is a bunch of 'Tosh'? best, dan |

Thanks for that definition - I always wondered what that meant!
As for Rolex - yep, they have figured out the whole marketing campaign plan rather well. And we keep buying. But they are a heck of a watch and I love my SD! BTW, I found it cathartic just reading that post, Jon. Thanks. James
