I am new to the forum and seeking some advice. I am looking at buying a 1990 2 tone DateJust 16233 with a custom made diamond and gold bezel. It comes with the box and original papers. The sale price is just under US$3,000.

If anyone could offer me some advice on:

1) what I should be looking for? (seller said I could taker it to the local Rolex shop)
2) pro's and cons of this particular watch
3) any other things I should know about buying a rolex (secondhand or new)

The price is pretty good, especially if you can get the original bezel in addition.

I would certainly take them up on the offer of getting the watch checked over by a Rolex AD.

That's about it.

Welcome to TRF!

Did the seller state that you could take to DJ to an AD for authentification BEFORE you pay?

About the aftermarket dial and bezel: RSC (Rolex Service Centre) will put ORIGINAL parts on your watch during service since their policy is to bring Rolex watches back to their original state. This will be carried out at YOUR expence.

Also, you would want to know when the watch was last serviced since Rolex watches ought to be serviced every 5th. year (cost of service is about 500 US Dollars - an amount you must take into consideration in the price if the watch needs service). Also, if he states that it HAS been regularly serviced, service papers proving it would be a plus.

Can you post a pic of the watch?

I went to see the watch today and the latest info is the bezel is custom made with 24 diamonds and they do not have the original. There is no service records for the watch. The serial number starts with an 'L' which indicates it is a 1988 (according to the "rolex FAQ" thread).

Any thoughts?

That's a good looking watch..

I'm not particularly fond of diamond bezels on a mans watch, but that one pulls it off nicely.

If the watch has not been serviced in a while, it is about time..

You can get your best price for it (they may come down) and then send it off to Rolex RSC. This will do three things..

1) Establish authenticity

2) Begin a papertrail for the watch that might be important in the future (Establish Provenance starting with you).

3) Ensure it is "like new" for it's time with you.

Make sure you take off the aftermarket bezel....Rolex will replace it with an original fluted bezel (you have to pay for it) and then you will have two bezels......

After going to the original dealer I did not get a good feel so I went to visit another dealer. She showed me two similar watches but the price is a lot more expensive (not a real concern). The watch I am now considering buying is a Z series Two Tone Date Just for $4,900. It has all the original paperwork (first purchased May 2007) and is under warranty for another 18 months. The other watch I looked at was a W series Two Tone W series with diamonds on the face at the hour marks. That is $4,350. I have attached two pics (not actual watches but similar). Any advice???? I want to buy the watch tomorrow as I am back to work after my holidays on Friday.

Go with the Z. It is a once in a life time purchase, so go with the newest. It is only a few dollars more. Regardless, you cannot go wrong with any of these decisions.

I am now the proud owner of a beautiful 116233 Z series two two gold and stainless steal Rolex. It is my first Rolex at the young age of 42..... Why did I wait so long????

Have owned it for 3 hours and cannot stop looking at it. I will post pictures in the next few days.

I also had my first win as a thoroughbred racehorse owner on the weekend. What a week!
