A difficult choice... help?

a choice that i am currently reviewing:

i would like to buy a single classic Rolex Sub, but i cannot yet chooose with or without date?

basing the choice on the following parameters:


1. which looks better overall?
2. re-sale value? which would be higher?

overall, i just want to buy one, i don't want to end up with a whole collection including subs, sd etc etc.

so.... give me your ideas, it should not be too difficult, and if possible, show me pics of your SUBS. various straps welcome.

Welcome to TRF! My Sub has to have a Date feature, and that's my personal preference, it's also the reason why I have never bought a Daytona. Best of luck in what you ultimately decide.

I agree that the date is key. But that doesn't stop my desire to own a Daytona!

Just happen to stop by my friend store today to look at his Red Sub collection. I am not a Sub fan. But, I like watch with date. I hope this picture will help your decision.

That's a nice daytona in the upper right corner. I didn't know they came in a pillow style box.

As far as Date vs No Date. I would say the No Date is closer to the vintage you can possibly get, if that matters to you. Take a look at http://www.oysterworld.de There is a good comparison of the 5513 vs 14060M

Both are great watches, there is no substitute to trying a watch in person. Put each on and see which one makes your heart skip a beat more. Good luck with whichever you choose.

Go with the date if you are used to it. Its like driving on the right side of the road instead of the left. You could do it and eventually get used to doing it. Samething with getting a watch that does or doesnt have the date issue as you are used to.

I have a Z series Submariner w/date. I have no problems with cyclops. But I notice on my older cycloped watches (not Rolex) gunk accumulate on the edges of the cyclops.

I like the clean look of the no-date sub, but I need the date, so SD for me.

Don't only get what you like, but what you might need.

I prefer the non-date aesthetically but sometimes it's good to have a date and I would think the resale value is a bit higher on the date one as many prefer that model. But there so something about the non-date that I love.

It's the same eternal question as when you want a girlfriend. Do you want a hot one or an intelligent one. Can't have them both! Hard choice!

I would try and find a Sub ND (No Date), but the NON COSC version, 14060M.

I believe that this model will become very collectible soon.

The Sub Date is also a nice watch, but IMHO, the "cleaner" look of the Sub ND dial appeals to me.

But at the end of the day, only YOU can decide what to choose. I suggest you try on both models and get the one that smiles back at you.

I like how cyclops looks on a Rolex watch,so my choice would be Sub Date.But,you can`t go wrong with any of those remarkable watches.

Personally 'hated' the cyclops - thought it was a stain on an otherwise great watch.

After much consideration and great advice from the wise folk on this forum .. I pulled the trigger on the subdate.

It goes without saying that having the date is better than not having it - period.

As far as the cyclops goes ... I am now a great fan. That watch is the quintessential Rolex and the cyclops is the signature design element. There are millions of other/brands models just like it and the cyclops is what differentiates it.

Best advice you'll ever get is to go put them both on - and the question will answer itself.

Dear all: i am grateful for your thoughful imput on this particular issue.

as you have said, if im used to having a date, it might be a bit difficult to get used to not having it. (ive got an EXP2 so, yes i am quite used to having it, as well as the GMT function)

the idea of the topic was to collect an overall opinion between the two Subs, and i am still debating among myself :) between the "clean" look and a loupe.

ive never tried on the Sub ND, and there is not much of chance to do so, due to the fact that in Russia, there is only one dealer for Rolex, and besides the simple fact of not having all the steel watches in stock they serioiusly over price them.

a simple example: i wanted to get a SD, but the Moscow price is USD 8,408.00.

from another supplier( not the rolex dealer):

a sub date will run me up to USD 5,918.00
Sub ND : USD 5,142.00

besides the fact, i am currently stationed 10000 km from Moscow, and there is delivery time of two weeks, 30% deposit, therefore between the two of the Subs, i am basically forced to make the decision with only trying on the Sub Date.

cpcc: a fellow Rolex nut from France told me once that its not too difficult to replace the crystal to get rid of the lens, therefore getting a cleaner look with the date.

Thani: with your present collection, its too hard to chooose :)

The Sub ND non COSC has a VERY accurate movement. Don't put too much into COSC rating. It is more marketing hype than a true indicator of the precision of a watch. In fact, the COSC rated Sub ND and Sub ND without COSC rating use the same movt.

Hey Andrew, you really need to go with your heart, everyone has different opinions when it comes to these models but the only bad thing anyone can ever say about the Sub ND is that they need the date. It is such a perfect looking watch, you really can't go wrong with it. When you get into to sub date, you get the cyclops argument with many disliking it and many liking it. I personally purchased the sub ND, for the reason above, it's the classic Rolex and the perfect watch.

You know what. You actually pick the wrong choice in beginning with. If you select GMT II SS. Then, you will not have this difficult decision of choosing date or no date. That will make your choice easier. I hope this response will piss a lots of SUBMARINER fan.
