GMT in NYC

Hi,

As a tourist moving around in NYC, staying in meat packing district, is it safe to bring my GMT? I'm getting married on the trip and I would really love to wear the watch during the cermony. I guess I could leave it in the safe at the hotel, but what's your opinion? i know that NYC is a large city with different areas, but some general idea would be helpful.

Regards
Erik

generally speaking, manhattan today is like disneyland compared to the manhattan of the 70s and 80s. practice normal big-city caution and you will have zero issues. enjoy your trip & have a wonderful wedding!

Yeah you have a better chance of losing money to a stockbroker or hipster than a thief in Manhattan these days.

Greetings from NYC. Relax, you'll be fine--it's a Rolex not an iPhone...

So true. iPhones are the hot ticket for thieves in NYC.

No worries with the Rolex.

Agreed with all above
I've worn very expensive watches all over NYC with no issue

Yet left my iPhone on a restaurant table one night, talked to the guy next to me for a minute and when I looked down it was gone. No question the guy cleaning up the table took it. I was in a spot where no one else could have gotten near me

It's a watch - wear it.

With the exception of some known trouble spots in the world I always wear mine. Just keep your wits about you and your eyes open. I just got back from a cruise stopping in Costa de Maya, Belize, Honduras & Cozumel. Wore my Sub with no issues whatsoever.

Chances are... if you are somewhere where your personal safety is at risk, your watch is probably not your first problem.

Just my humble opinion....

I live in the city and have worn my Tudors and Rolexes everyday for over 23 years. Nothing ever happened. And I think NYC is probably the city with the highest saturation of Rolexes anywhere in the world.

There was only one incident I remember that was iffy about 6 or 7 years ago.

I was wearing my mint vintage Cosmograph with a black dial and white sub-dials at night on the subway and this guy sitting across from me was eye-balling it. He was sizing me up figuring whether he could take me. I could just feel it, he wanted this watch. It was like scene out of "American Psycho". And he was built like a lean, trained fighter.

I went to the door to get off the train and so did he on the next door. In the station I got off and so did he. I stood still and waited and second before the doors closed I jumped back into the train. Too fast for him to follow.

We looked at each other and he was pissed off. I showed him my middle finger with the hand I was wearing the watch on as the train took off. That was close.

But again: It was the only time ever I felt nervous about wearing a valuable.

You'll be totally fine - actually blending in as a New Yorker ;-)

I live in the city and although all my watches are insured I'm not concerned about wearing them at all. If i were going to a sketchy neighborhood at 3am i might consider putting a rolex in my pocket as to not attract unnecessary attention but other than that I really never worry. Rolexes are about as common as taxi's in NYC (probably more common actually). Don't worry about it, enjoy your watch. If concerned, consider insuring it, its never bad to add that extra security.

Enjoy Your Wedding!!!

First of all, congratulation!
Ditto other posters above.
The meat packing district is very safe nowadays.
I do miss the good old days when my senses heightens at night in the area.
The smell of blood, the sight of prostitutes/trans/addicts hiding in shadows, the sound of muted steps behind you and best of all -the fear of getting rob/attack. lol

in meatpacking a rolex is comparable to a gshock. No one will notice it and there is a million of them.

When I was there, there were so many Rolexes floating around on the street, subway, coffee shops--it seemed everyone had one. I think that in a place like NY, where a replica can be had for $75 or less, no one is going to bother you, since no one knows the difference between a glance at a fake or the real thing; at least that is what my friends from NY think. But they cautioned: "now if you's in Jersey, that's a different story."

I'm in New York roughly three times a month and always have on my GMT. I've never once felt it was a bad decision from Queens to Manhattan. Newark I've wondered about a few times but never changed my behavior.

NYC is one of the safest cities in US; hence, wear your GMT with pride.

I visited NYC last year and wore my LVc, night and day during the trip.

Meat packing is very safe, and you will see many rolexs around you! You will be fine to wear your rolex around most neighborhoods in NYC. This morning, on the subway, I was wearing a rolex, and noted that two other gentleman were, a SubC + a GMTIIC. You will be better off wearing then leaving in the hotel safe to be honest. - one of the most comfortable cities to wear a rolex, just use your judgement if you think you are in a bad neighborhood, try not to flaunt it, but it really shouldnt be a problem, if you look like you are aware of your surroundings, as most new yorkers do! have a great trip!
