I don't really disagree with any of the article except a Rolex Submariner has an undefinable charm, prestige, coolness, call it whatever you want that an Omega will never have. I have had both watches.

No one has taken on the classic SUB and won .... battles rage on about bracelets and case sizes and craftsmanship but each time, the sub comes out on top .... if you want the Omega SM, I suggest you check out the sub and wait a little longer to collect your funds but get the SUB ... there is nothing like the sub ...the most copied sports and diver watch design on the face of this earth... and there is a very good reason why: Because SUB is the GOD Diver!

When I think of a dive watch. I think Sub. It was what I knew since I was younger. Rolex marketing/brand brainwashed me from the beginning thanks to the product placement with James Bond haha! Although Omega became a James Bond movie sponsor later on, but if it was Omega first then I'd probably prefer an Omega over Rolex. Both are great watches.

It's unfortunate that my wrists are way too small to wear a PO. I love the watch, but it's thicker than my G-Shock!

Ok... As I spend most of my time in TRF general Rolex discussions... Why does the "Planet Ocean" not say PLANET OCEAN on the watch face?

What gives these omega people the satisfaction of wearing the "Planet Ocean"

Is there some other distinct factor that I'm not aware of? Because A TON of omega watches say "seamaster"

(As a side note, Paul Pluta rates Rolex as a prestige watch maker at 7 out of 10 and Omega at 6 out of 10. Breitling was 7 out of 10.
For anyone who is interested, the king of snobbism rated Patek Philippe as 10 out of 10.
So if you take him seriously, Rolex rates ahead of Omega on the prestige scale.)

Good article, though. I already have a Sub and I would be delighted to add the Omega. Couldn't go wrong with either one.

Interesting comparison! I have both watches. 116610 and the 232.( 42mm ) PO. If I can only have 2 watches, I must say these 2. love them both, no one is a clear winner, I just rotate them, depending on my mood of the day :)

I own several Omegas, 2 of which are PO's, and i think they're fantastic watches in their own right. In a purely objective comparison, I can see how the PO and sub would match up fairly closely, however, subjectively, there's no comparison. The sub wins hands down as THE iconic dive watch.

Omega makes a fine diver in its own right. The Seamaster has been through hundreds of iterations over the years but the Sub has stayed mostly the same. I like 'em both

yes. Omegas Planet Ocean 8500 is the 2nd best sports watch in the affordable luxury range. The Rolex DEEPSEA is # 1 IMHO.

Clearly you cannot go wrong with the Submariner as well.

I do love my 8500 Planet Ocean. Such great fit/finish/quality for the price. Really, really impressive watch.

Both are great watches. Like a true watch addict I like both and want both. And a Blancpain 50 fathoms, AP Royal Oak, PP Nautilus....

Although not the same references discussed in the article, I've owned the 14060M and a PO 42 2500. Both are great and I sold the Sub a few months back because I was tired of seeing one on every other wrist in town. I love the PO but I've NEVER been able to get the bracelet to fit just right and that's become quite irritating over the last few months. It keeps marvelous time, but ultimately, there's a good chance I go back to the Sub or possibly an SD. As far as best overall sporting watch, I'd lean toward the Sub, because I find its size much more versatile and it weighs a touch less as well.

First, John B. Holbrook, II does the best reviews and as far as I know started the type of format the author used. Not that it is trade marked, just a tip of the hat to John.

Omega definitely has a winner. Free sprung balance, balanced bridge, and the co-axial escapement. I really like that for time zone changes the hour hand jumps without hacking the movement so you do not lose the exact time. Also, finally, the bracelet links are removed with screws vice pin and collar. It is a gosh tall (thick), but still doable. 200g is a heavy watch, for me too heavy particularly with the height off of the wrist. Not as bad as the DSSD, but approaching that arena. A dive watch should be comfortable and I believe Omega missed the boat on that one with the new Seamaster.

Personally, I am not that fond of either watch. I would take a old school Submariner 16610 as for me it just works. I also prefer the older Planet Ocean as it is significantly more comfortable then the new Seamaster. Not that I likely would find one in my collection. A 16610LV or a Seadweller 4000... now those are dive watches that I would own.

The Omega SM 300M is my very first higher value watch. Bought it because I like the blue dial and bezel plus the applied markers, red seamaster wording and of course the new (then) co-axial 2500C movement. Frankly, I don't know much about watches then. Still own it.

Forward almost a 7 yrs later and a few more luxury watches, I would surely opt for the Sub now if to choose between the 2. Omega is still a great watch but given the history, I will go for a Speedy rather than a Seamaster. Any taker for my preloved and well kept Seamaster? Just kidding, will keep it for sentimental reason.

I had a chance to buy Rolex when I bought my Omega!

But The Omega for me has a more charm to Rolex!

Looks more younger( Iam 30 Years) to Rolex!

Orange bezel, 6-9-12Orange, si14, co-axial, and other stuffs!

Was almost the same price in Mexico Airoport, Of Course the rolex was a little bit more expensive than Omega just a Little!

So I Try Both, but My choice!

Of course I respect you opinions folks, But Rolex it´s for Older People( 40 for up), and Omega this model in particullar it´s made for young People( 40 to less)!

Just my Opinion, don´t take this the wrong side :)

Having said that I really like the new ceramics from Omega, PO and SMP, which I think are a step up in quality and attractiveness from the older models.
