Classic 36mm Datejust - too small?
I'm thinking of getting the 36mm Datejust, white dial with Roman numerals. I have some questions for Datejust owners:
1) do you find it difficult adjusting to the smaller size if your other regular wearers are 40/44mm, like the GMT ceramic and Deepsea? 2) which version is more popular, the one with the smooth steel bezel or fluted white gold bezel? Is it worth paying the extra for the latter? Any input would be much appreciated. Cheers! |

I would say 36mm is a great size, not too small by any means. Others will disagree. I swap back and forth from my larger Sub to a vintage datejust turnograph.
You have to determine if it works for you.

It's up to you, I can never say no to a vintage day date on leather, and that's 36. Sometimes you need a small size to compliment an occasion.

I have a couple. I like the size equally to my 40mm and 42mm.
I see more fluted bezel than domed out and about.

It's a great size. With a wrist size about seven inches it's a perfect fit (42mm is the limit for me).

IMHO 36 is a good size for the average man and so is 40, but 36 will look small on football and basketball players....my 18238 is the perfect size for me. No real difference in size feel with my sub. Fluted or smooth, either looks great - pick what you like better or if you really can't decide, flip a coin...

I don't think it's too small.
I prefer the DJII on my wrist though. Then again if your wrist if less than 7 inches you might actually be better with 36mm. At 7.25 inches, I'm happy there's some wrist visible on either side with the DJII but only just. |

Most women I know, if their arm is vertical, their watch is a good 1/4 the way down their forearm. This is why they can get away with wearing bigger. "Men" these days wear 44-48mm Breitlings and the like. Doesn't mean I'm going to follow. I'm not interested in what other women or men are wearing. You might want to rephrase your statement with "most". Not all women wear 40mm watches. My gf's watch is 33mm and she even wears that pretty loose. |

My wrist size is 7.25" and my 36mm DJ looks just fine....I love it! I also have a 40mm EXPII and yes, my DJ looks a little small by comparison. But that's just a matter of getting used to it. After a few hours of wear it looks perfect again. Funny thing is that when I change back to the EXP it looks like a Big Ben alarm clock for awhile. As you can see from my pics, I have the TT white dial with romans and fluted bezel. IMO the DJ is classic Rolex.

For dress I wear 36mm, for sport models I wear 40mm.
Wearing a 41mm DJII under a dress shirt doesn't fit well with me. |

I think watch size is a matter of personal preference. I've seen a lot of people who swear that a man can't/shouldn't wear anything less than a CD-sized watch on their wrist. I have a variety myself from a 29 mm Hamilton Martin to a 36mm Datejust to a 40mm Oris BC3. Over my years of watch collecting, I've learned that men used to wear smaller watches because they were more convenient than pocket watches. Hence, lots of vintage watches such as my Hamilton seem very small. I'll admit the first time I wore the Martin, I was taken aback, especially since I had worn the BC3 daily for 10 years prior. Now I'm perfectly comfortable in both.
I say go with what works for you. After all, you have to wear it. |

Watch size is entirely subjective IMO. Wear whatever you're comfortable with. I personally have a 36mm Datejust, but I'm just as comfortable in my 29mm Hamilton Martin and my 40mm Oris BC3.

I have a small wrist, so 36mm is fine. I prefer the smooth bezel version and Oyster bracelet combination.

Too small?
No, not too small for me and I gotz a large wrist. As a matter of fact, David (SW) comp'd an extra link to me. Add a Datejust to your rotation!

I've always loved the looks of the classic Datejusts and decided to try one. Had to let it go. Within the first few days I just couldn't get used to the fact that it looked and felt too small! I don't have a big wrist,(7"), but it just looked like a woman's watch on my wrist. I'm now shopping for one for my wife. It's a personal decision, but I would recommend 40mm and up.

Hi,
I would say that 36mm is just the right size. In particular the new (well, they were introduced in 2005 - at some point I'm going to have to stop thinking of them as 'new' ) Datejust cases with the polished lugs and re-designed bracelets have a much bigger presence on the wrist than their 36mm diameter might suggest. I think the best advice here is generally the best advice you can give with any watch purchase or question - go to a dealer, try one on, and see what you think. |

I have 6.5in wrist and anything 36-40mm is best for me. My limit would be 42mm.

It all depends on *who* is wearing it. It's completely subjective and personal.
