Kitchen Appliances

Here I am with my next question . . . maybe for the Ladies again on TRF . . .

What are the best Kitchen appliances in the US

Standard provided in the house are the GE Profile double wall oven

But . . what is better ?

GE Monogram
Wolf
Kitchenaid
Viking
Bosch
Electrolux
Whirlpool
Jennair

Mrs bakes and cooks a lot so . . . we really need something GOOD !

Especially if you all are coming over to visit us and want to have some Macarons, etc . . .

When we redid out kitchen four years ago we went with Bosch for everything. Double wall oven, dishwasher, fridge, cooktop and washer & dryer.

The W&D and fridge we actually moved from the old house. You can spend more money of Viking, Jennair, Wolf or other top names, but I did not see a commensurate difference in quality with regards to price. The Bosch stuff is built like a tank, with everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Simple clean designs, that are like workhorses. We have had no issues with any of the Bosch stuff.

You can sort of see the ovens, dishwasher fridge and cooktop in this picture.

Check out Consumer Reports online.

Definitely worth the price of a one-year online membership.

I have had two of the higher end European brand dishwashers Asko and Bosch. I found them to be very quiet and good at cleaning but the parts price on the Asko pump was more than a new high-end Kenmore unit.

I really think none are as good as they were 30-40 years ago.....all seem to have problems when they get 6-7 years old.....so you will buy another.
We bought Jennair when we moved to Houston and replaced the whole Kitchen
Except for the Fridge is LG .....
Most appliances are made by a few big companies now
My wife loves the dishwasher....so little noise....you have to look at the lights to see if its running.
My wife wants to replace the fridge with a jennair now....we have lots of problems with the ice maker on the LG
I told her 2k is lots of money for some ice.

Wolf and Viking are on their own level, they are more used in a commercial setting in terms of quality and finish then the others.

Interesting that that list does not show BSH group.

Bosch Siemens Hausgerate is one of the world's largest appliance manufacturers. They also still make some of the appliances here in the US. They invested a ton of money in design and manufacturing in NC as well as a number of other places domestically.

They make Bosch, Siemens and Thermador appliances among others. They are the largest appliance maker in Europe, and one of the fastest growing appliance companies in the US.

Our Bosch dishwasher backs up to our master suite. You cannot hear it run in the bedroom.

If price is a factor in quality, and I'm not saying this is necessarily true, these two rate at the top for ranges.
For refrigerators the top of the line is Sub Zero. I've had some problems with Sub Z so I'm not convinced. I like to refer to mine as "You can buy better but you can't pay more"!

We put a brand new kitchen in our house a year ago, when we bought/redid it, have all SS GE monogram appliances. They're real good so far.
French door fridge
Oven
Microwave
Dishwasher

I have KitchenAid Convection and the matching dish washer. Lots of use, still looks brand new. I love both. The dishwasher is quiet, quiet like a mouse. The fridge is a piece of sh!t. don't go cheap on the fridge, it gets the most most use and abuse. You want high quality stuff in the fridge, no plastic or minimal plastic, cause it will break, snap off.

Try to get all items from the same manufactures, so the kitchen looks professional.

And get a gas stove of course, none of that shiny metal for the cook top, you want that heavy duty commercial look. And get at least one big ass power burner, you want to boil water in 4.3 seconds, lots of BTU's for that. It's worth it !!

And an RO system for your ice maker or you'll have cloudy ice, who wants a cloudy ice cube in the scotch. And the ice maker will last twice as long with mineral free water, my ice is almost crystal clear.

Good luck

my thoughts are unless you are a crazy excellent chef almost anything will do. i have a sub zero in my house, but normal range and dishwasher. the wolf and viking ranges look awesome, but require a proper commercial hood to be installed properly.

Really ... cant see paying 3-4k for a stove when most stuff we cook is in the microwave.
Some might get their moneys worth from one but an old retired couple like us....no way....we eat out half the time now anyway.
When I was single ....never cooked one thing on a stove top or oven in 10 years....if it was not microwavable I would never buy it.

Thanks for the info Gents !

We'll my wife uses all appliances daily . . . she still cooks and bakes . . . day in day out . . .

And I love it so that's the reason why we want good working appliances.

There is always the warranty . . . but I always hope that we don't need it . . .

When I was trying to build a custom home... I did much research on this and talked to several people about this.

Subzero beats all in frigeration - it has 2 compressors and has a certain air purification device.

Wolf beats all in stove - much moreso than the somewhat unstable company that runs Viking.

Kitchen Aid is quite good, mid range. Moreso than Jennair.

Dishwashers - they're all about the same. All of them are rebranded versions of one of 3 or 4 dishwasher brands.

We have a Jennair oven and would seriously consider never owning that brand again. It stopped working in July 2012. Repair guy came out fixed a part, still not working Aug, replaced different part. Still didn't work properly, repair guy came back out, the needed part "isn't in stock with Jennair".....fast forward...Dec, tired of waiting on part called Jennair, they offered me the price of the part to purchase a new oven ($300), they refused to replace the oven as a "lemon". The part finally came in the end of January = no oven for 7 months!

I hope my luck stays till we sell house.....and I hope thats soon too
Ive heard friends cuss wolf, sub zero, and mainly electrolux

So true - about getting the same brand of oven, cooktop, dishwasher and fridge - it ties together the look. If this isn't possible, then at least choose the same finish/color on each.

AND - try to find a dishwasher with a stainless steel interior. Plastic ones tend to hold odors. Most high end dw's have stainless innards.

Mark, I do beg to differ one one point - who wants an ice cube in their scotch in any case, cloudy or not?

And, my personal favorite for never fail cooking - this indestructible dinosaur, a circa 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt...

They don't make them like they use to....
I really think most are made to break or made cheaply so you have to replace it soon.
My mothers house still has all the original Kenmore stuff that was new in the house from 71....all still work.....as far as i know nothing has been replaced and over 40 years old....even the washer and dryer are Kenmore and still going.
If I remember correctly Maytag made most of Sears stuff back then.
Only reason I know this stuff is my father was a silent partner and owned half of an appliance store in Mesa AZ in the 70's till 1981.
Back then he said Maytag, Kenmore and Speed Queen were the best made in that era.

Lisa, I had a Westinghouse electric stove from the 1940s for years and it was just great. It had two side-by-side ovens and lasted about 60 years. Not shabby.

My new GE Profile electric stove is very nice and capable.

Some (a great many) kitchens are for show, and some are for cooking. I would go with Consumer Reports, or if Cook's Illustrated has ratings of large appliances, don't know if they do.

Agree on this, it's a must. And 3 times a year I run that cleaning stuff through it with the hottest water possible. I have a great water softener cause of the junk in this desert water, makes a big difference on how clear the glass ware comes out after cleaning.

Mark, I do beg to differ one one point - who wants an ice cube in their scotch in any case, cloudy or not?

It gets kinda warm here in the summer. I like my glass full of ice on occasion and usually the drink is gone before you hear the ice cube(s) crack

A vote for SubZero & Viking here. They seem to be bulletproof in the 10+ years we have owned.

Bosch makes a great SS interior dishwasher, and Miele a first-class built-in coffeemaker.

I put in an all Viking kitchen a few years ago. Dishwasher (made by Asko at the time) stove and oven, microwave, and refrigerator. The stove and oven have had lots of problems. It is a good thing I bought the extended warranty. They have been here a lot. Viking no longer stocks a lot of parts so when something breaks you have to wait until enough of them have broken nationwide for them to make new parts. As a result some repairs take 3 to 4 months. The burners still are not calibrated properly. I have given up trying to get it done correctly. The Microwave has been service twice I think. Broken parts. Would I buy Viking again? No way. The Viking guy told me to buy Wolf. He says they are more money but worth it.

Here's what we have. All high quality, all matching stainless, all very quiet. It's worth noting that these were chosen for function and not designed to impress the neighbors with the highest price flashy brands on the market like many remodels, though they are still quite pricey. :(
DCS range.
Dacor double oven.
GE monogram fridge and wine fridge.
Bosch dish washer.
We still need a warming drawer installed. it's a shelf now. :)
Jura coffee/espresso maker.
Vitamix blender for the protein shakes, and it makes a mean soup!
Have fun on the remodel and budget an extra 20%.

I went with Bosch all the way, and could not be happier.
Also - If I may recommend, consider Viking cookware and bakeware.

Miele is the best and the most expensive.
But if you check what we have available in the EU compared to the US . . .
In the US you only have (maybe) 10 % of all Miele appliances for sale.
No high pressure steamer . . .

BTW is there someone who can help me regarding the 50 Hz in the EU vs the 60Hz in the US ?

For the 110V to the 220V that isn't the problem but will the difference in Hz cause any damage ?
