Help with 1655

I recently purchased a 1655. I got it from a reputable dealer with an extensive guarantee about it's authenticity. I noticed that the 6 on the date wheel is closed. Does anyone know what this means regarding its authenticity or value?

Thanks so much!

Isn't this the 1655 from 1983 you posted about the other day? If it is, perhaps Rolex had already done away with the open 6 date wheels by the early to mid-'80s. Not sure. I always thought the open 6s and 9s were more of a '60s and '70s thing. The other possibility is that during a service the date wheel was changed.

I don't know if this will work or not. I'm trying to figure it out with my daughter.

I talked to two other watch people yesterday and neither of them know the answer. Would there have been closed 6s in 1979 on the 1655 or is this a replaced date wheel?

Here's a link to an old 1680 thread talking about the same subject. In this case, the 6 on the "26" is closed, but the rest of the 6's and 9's are open. How do your other 6's and 9's look?

https://www.rolexforums.com/showpost...62&postcount=5

The post says the closed 26 is "original" for the 1680, and mentions a possible datewheel swap between a 1675 and the 1680..the 1675 and 1655 use the same movement and datewheel right? The font looks the same comparing your 1655 to the wheel in the linked post..maybe you've got a service wheel.

Yes. Thanks. It has closed 6s and 9s except fro the 26 and it has the brushed silver. I assume the 1675 and 1655 use the same one -- which leads me to think the silver was in the original 1655. It would make sense that if it wasn't original they would have used an older 1680 in service.

But of course I'm just guessing . . .

Excuse me -- it [B]doesn't[B] make sense that they would use an older date wheel for servicing.

I don't know, dirk...it seams like an open 26 is generally a rare thing, based on other threads I'm finding. Interesting idiosyncrasy for sure.

I PM'ed the author of that second thread to see if he can lend some WISdom.

This thread seems to be a bit more definitive:

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?p=3123268

Looks like the consensus is open 6s & 9s everywhere, except the 26 can be either open or closed. Post 7 here mentions a closed 26 on a 1675 ca 1971, which was the first year of 1655 production. Sounds like you're safe to me.

Yes. It seems definitive. I would have been surprised and disappointed if it was a replaced date wheel. I'm sure the dealer would have taken it back if I wished, but I love the faded yellow hour hand and would hate to have to make a tough decision.

Thanks for all your help!!!

Glad you feel better! No problem; I love the research part. I can't decide which aspect I enjoy more, the homework or the actual watches. It's a great hobby!

Your good to go man. Most date wheels are close 6 on the 26

While the rest of 6 and 9s are open (I.e 6 9 16 19 and 29).

I have a silver date wheel on my 1680 and it has closed 6 for the 26 only

Thanks, Wahasa!

Does anyone have any insight as to why Rolex would close just the 6 in the 26 and leave the other 6s and 9s open? Makes me wonder if it was deliberate or possibly an accident by their supplier/manufacturer.

Can anyone out there shed any light on this?

Funny, I noticed this the other day on my 1655 too! I was a bit nervous, sort of telling myself to calm down, but it bothering me a bit during the day. Now, the world is right again! :)
