Dayt-oh-no-na

My wife had been looking at the 116515 rose gold ceramic Daytona for quite a while now and with her birthday coming up (today) we ended up buying one from my local AD last Saturday and had it gift wrapped there.

She opened it this morning and I'll be darned if there isn't a pin sized blemish of some sort on the crystal surface right by the 2 numeral.

Now unworn and back in the box. Fortunately I got a picture of it right after she opened the box and before it was even touched but something tells me this is going to end up being a major pain in the behind based on a search of similar threads. This is the first new watch I have bought that has been messed up.

Should have learned my lesson by now and really inspected it carefully, however there is a chance that it was scratched during the re-boxing or de-stickering process in which case would have had to inspect it as it was leaving the hand of the AD and placed into the box.

Yeah I am hoping so. I have bought a ton of watches from this AD so I'm hoping they take care of it even if she's without it for a while.

That's sad I hope they don't have to send it away and mean waiting weeks - that would really be sad.

Sorry to hear of finding a problem on the watch especially since it was a gift for your wife on her birthday.....looks like she may have to wait for hopefully a short time before she can wear and enjoy her new watch. Did they have another one in stock so you could change it out???

A scratch on the crystal would drive me crazy so Id get it fixed/exchanged. Might take a while but its a stunning watch that's def worth any wait!

Hi Louis,

First, congratulations on your wife's B-Day.
Now, from a business point of view it would be unwise for the AD not to believe you and make a problem out of changing the crystal.
As you said, you bought a lot of watches there in the past and that Daytona is very expensive as well.

I am pretty confident that they will replace it without an issue.
Too bad it didn't go flawless, but in the end it will all clear itself out.

Good luck and keep us updated on the result!

Crystals are pretty strong, I'm not sure how this could have happened without a pretty hard knock. Having said that, I thought I put a chip in mine once but a bit of water and heavy elbow grease and it came off. Whatever it was, it was stuck on like super glue.

Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully the AD makes it right, without having to ship to RSC.

AD says they'll take care of it which probably means it will get shipped out; it's not the end of the world as my wife has other Rolexes to wear in the interim, it's just sad because she was so excited on her birthday.

Originally when I saw it I was thinking it would be ok to just leave it because if it goes to RSC who knows what you'll get back, but after seeing it show up so easily in the pictures I'd rather have a clean crystal and something else scratched

Thanks for the well wishes, I'm sure it will be resolved eventually. It's a shame because the piece is otherwise stunning!

This is the BNIB shot, not even taken out of the box. See the white speck by the 2, that gives a tactile response on the fingernail and cannot be wiped off with a cloth.

Yup I see it and for that money I'd want it right. Chances are they'll take care of it rather quickly. All the best.

Yeah, I mean if it was a used piece or something or I got a super good deal on it personally I'd just wear it until it needed service although oddly I have never scratched a sapphire crystal.

My trusty old Omega Seamaster has battle scars everywhere and the crystal is still dead mint.

My wife saw it as soon as she put it on and was not pleased.

My wife has that same level of attention to detail (that I lack )

That's one hell of a nice gift.

They'll sort it out for you. Crystals don't cost much, and anticipation makes the heart grow fonder.

Sure can see what you mean. That would bother me too, especially being BNIB.

Hope it gets resolved quickly.

Oh that is definitely something that would bug me too especially for a BNIB and for the money that you spend on a 116515. Glad they will take care of it. It's a beauty!!

An update, we went to the dealer yesterday to have them look at it. They agreed there's something wrong with the crystal and after looking at it under magnification and messing around with it they think the defect might actually be inside the crystal.

They put on the shorter strap for her which was great and she's wearing it this week as we have a couple events she wanted to wear it to including a Panerai rose gold reception next week, must wear rose gold to the rose gold event . After that it's going back to Rolex to get the crystal replaced no cost to us.

As for the watch itself man, it's great. I'm kind of jealous of it, my SS isn't quite doing it for me. I wore my DJ II TT yesterday to try and get the "brick of gold" feel but it has too much steel on it. While waiting at the AD I accidentally tried on the GMT IIc yellow gold with black dial, now that scratches the "brick of gold" itch quite nicely, hmm...

I feel sorry for your bank account, I made the same mistake with a YG Daytona and unfortunately, I couldn't get it out of my head, I had to have one. 6 months later and it was on my wrist permanently (along with a big smile).

I say this as a warning to anyone who has even the remote possibility of affording a full gold Rolex: if you try one on, you WILL end up buying one, it's only a matter of time.... If you have better things to do with your money, STAY AWAY!

You have been warned!

I am glad they are taking care of this for you. If it were me, I would have returned the watch and ask for a new watch and not send to the RSC.
