Watch On Other Side of Wrist?

I was in Europe a few months back and noticed some people wear their watch with the face on the inner part of the wrist. I tried it and is seems a more natural movement to see the time.

Any Europeans out there that wear their watch this way?

I'd much rather scratch up the clasp than the face. I only think it looks good with square or rectangular-faced thin watches.

I was under the impression that the flipped style was a military practice.

It used to be much more common than it is today..

Possibly a carry-over from the pocket watch days... You always put your pocket watch in the pocket with the crystal towards your body.. This protected the fragile crystal, and some say that it kept the temperature more constant, and therefore a more accurate and protected watch.

As a side note...Gruen made a watch in the 1940's that was designed to fit on the SIDE of your wrist..

Here's a little story for you. When I was at school and I would get detention, my teacher would make me turn my watch so that the face would be on my pulse rather than my wrist. This was so everytime I would look at my watch and it would be upside down, it would remind me that I had detention.

Along time ago when I was a teenager, that was the "cool" way to wear your watch with your long sleeve shirts rolled up 2 folds. But we had our cigs in the sleeve of our t-shirts also. Edd

My Grandad wore his watch on the underside of his wrist for as long as I can remember he said it was easier just to turn your wrist and look at the time.
I guess it originated from the very early wristwatches/pocket watch conversions when the strap lugs were at 3 and 9 so 12 would have been by the palm when looking at the watch on the underside of the wrist it would be in the right position?

I think it started as a military "tactical" practice so that the watch's crystal wouldn't flash in a tactical situation. Occassionally, and not with a Rolex, I have worn my watch that way before going into a long meeting with a client ...that way, I can easily tell the time without appearing to "look at the clock."

I used to have a teacher in HS that wore her watch like this. Back then I just thought it was an "old lady" thing......

Actually, I have worn my watch this way in the past to remind myself about a meeting or a task that I don't want to forget to do. It's like tying a string on your finger. I know of a few other guys that wear there watches like this for that same reason. I am not to worried about scratching the watch since it is always tucked under by cuff.

It all started with Linda Evans as wonder woman, some men appreciate wearing their watches the same way. More power to all
