SUB Owners: Are you having a hard time rotating your bezel?
Hi folks,
I am curious if any sub owners are having or have ever had hard time rotating ther bezels? For me, the answer is NO. I have a 15yr old submariner and the bezel turns like a charm. The reason I ask is that I have 3 SEIKO Monsters, that I bought abut 7 yrs ago. Like clockwork, their bezels have become stiff -- I mean you need pliers to rotate them -- unless you dip them in water, they rotate like new. But once dry, you need pliers again. This is just proof for me that you get what you pay for. A 15yr old sub, whose bezel rotates like charm and 3 crappy seikos that are less than 7yrs old and their bezel is stiff like a rock. Those in my family who argue with me about why spend so much on a Rolex, next time, I am gonna throw those monster watches in their face and say "That's why!" ... I am not trying to start a Seiko vs Rolex hate thread but man, Rolex shines... stands heads and shoulders above seiko ... you got to have mental issues to compare the two brands ... Luckily I got only $400 invested in the monsters ... and this is a lesson that makes me proud to have spend thousands on Rolexes because time will tell what is quality and what is seiko ... |

Another satisfied customer
Now & then my bezel may stiffen up depending how dirty my activities are... But with the aluminum type, its easy to pop it off & give it a wipe... Good as new

Soak the watches in warm water with dawn dish soap. Turn them under water and see if they get any easier. If they do, then work the bezel under soapy water for awhile. This can do wonders to a stiff bezel.

In addition, Rolex is not exactly the Rolls Royce of horology...that title would probably be best reserved for Patek Phillipe.

I'd say the Rolex is of the old Mercedes Benz cars of the 70's and 80's built like a vault. Seiko is the Toyota of watches, good quality for the price paid

My first mechanical watch was a Seiko 5. I still have it and (I think) it is now 21 years old. I haven't worn it very much, since I got my Datejust 12 years ago. Until then, the Seiko was my main watch and it has never been serviced.
When I pick the Seiko up and give it a couple of shakes (there is no manual wind capability, only a rotor), it fires up first time, every time. Its timekeeping also seems to be very good. For a watch that was really comparatively inexpensive, it is simply wonderful. I don't think I will ever be persuaded to say something bad about Seiko watches. Having said that, when I glance down at my wrist and see a Rolex there, it always brightens my day in a way that a Seiko can't. |

My sub bezel doesn't turn freely. It won't go clockwise.

I know you are happy to own Rolex watches but you are comparing "Apples to Oranges", Seiko makes many fine watches which are equal too and can surpass Rolex. But if you are comparing a $150.00-$200.00 Seiko to a Rolex that cost thousands you are not comparing equals!!!
Take it easy.....Leo

Everyone deserves at least one fine watch, but for two days I wore one of my Timex chronographs and I really enjoyed the experience. Today, I wore my Seiko 5 and I think it's pretty cool, too. I've forgotten how many I have now, since they're not organized, but it'll take a couple of weeks, at least, to go through them all. I have several Timex chronographs. I'm going to buy a very nice leather band for one that has an aging bracelet and make sure it gets some wrist time, too. I don't think we should be too hard on the cheapo watches. They serve useful purposes, too.

Fling your Seiko out the window, the entire watch will be spinning freely until they hit the ground!

As the owner of both these models I'm going to shout up for the Monster's defence. These thing offer phenomenal value for money, and I doubt that the bezels aren't an easy fix.
In 15 years I would guess your Sub has had 2 or 3 services at what, £400 a pop? The Monster costs about £120. I am sure a service would fix the bezel and be cheap, but even if you bought a new Monster every 5 years instead of servicing it you would only spend £1200 in 50 years. About the price of a Sub's bracelet. Three new Monsters in the Sub's 15 year life would have cost less than the Sub's servicing. Of course the Sub is a better quality product, but you really can't knock the Monster for value at all. It's a bargain!
