Dial Swap on Datejust...

I have been looking around for a WG/SS DJ with a Roman dial, at a fair price. Yes there are alot of them out there for $3500+, but I would like to find one for under $2000.

So I got to thinking... can I pick up a pre-owned DJ and swap the dial for one that I like. It just seems that all the pre-owned DJ in the $1500-$2000 range have ugly dials. Has anyone done this before. I am not concerned about resale value, nor RSC rejecting the Frankinstein watch. I'm sure I can get a Rolex certified tech to do the swap while they are doing a service.

I hope I am not upseting anyone for altering a Rolex, but I would be doing the world a favor buy updating a old, out dated, ugly watch!

You certainly can. From what I've seen it's relatively easy to get DJ dials, and there are plenty to choose from. And hey, original or not, the watch making you happy is all that counts!

well it would be easy finding a jubilee datejust is many stores, ebay and so.. and i dont see a problem with changing its dial?? u can do that..

I expect the old and new DJ dials to be of the same size despite the new DJ case being beefed up, so yes, I believe you could do the swap. It is also the same movt. (cal. 3135), so the dial feet should be placed on the same places on both new and old dials, at least for the Cal. 3135.

What does a Rolex OEM dial sell for? Can it be ordered through my AD?

There's nothing wrong with changing a dial in a DJ to one you like...provided the dial was offered in that model.

However, by the time you get done with a service and a dial change, won't you have about as much in it as one you want that you could pick up for a bit more...?

Not sure on the price, but I know most AD's are going to avoid giving you a non-original part for your Roller. I know Rolex certified watchmakers out there with Rolex parts accounts that will keep an eye out for what you're looking for and sometimes order two, but that's going to be up to your individual watchmaker. They can be had, but I don't know if going to your AD would be your best bet.

I found this on preownedrolexes.com, I think it would look nice with a white or Rhodium Roman dial.

looks good. good luc with it. i am thinking of doing the same thing (getting a 16014) due to its great pricing. I am not sure about the dial though but if i found a MOP dial that would be great!

BTW just check the hands to make sure they arent too yellow it would look weird with a brand new dial.

I certainly wouldn't say that's an ugly dial.

Great thing about DJs is there are a million of them out there, and they're always popping up. I browsed for about 3 months before a beautiful 3-yo SS/WG DJ with white roman dial dropped in my lap at a great price.

I say hold out for a few months.
