1989 Rolex Day-Date...problem?

Hey guys,

My sister was given a lovely YG DD from her father in law. But she was telling me the watch stops moving after around 12 hours, even when she wears it. I told her she should wind it, but she didn't know how, so I showed her how to do it. When I was turning the crown clockwise (winding it up), it wasn't very quick and smooth. It was kind of harder and isn't as fluid as my DJ2. Why is that? Are the older Rolex wound in a different a way? Or is there something wrong with her watch? I'm kind of worried, because I hope I didn't do something wrong.

Thanks guys.

.

This watch most probably needs a service (after 24 years it's not abnormal).

It's worth it for such a watch.

ps: do your brother in law have a sister ?

The crown and stem may be binding up, or the mainspring has a problem.

Like Alpino said, it's worth a service.

Even after service, my vintage Tudor Day-Date didn't wind smoothly (quietly) like a modern watch. I could feel more vibration and hear more of the winding sound so it might not be fair to compare it to what you experience on a DJ2.

She's definitely going to be taking it in for service. But it should be fine right? The movement shouldn't be damaged or anything?

No, you can't damage the watch just by winding it...

Thank you for the reply Larry, and thank you to everyone who replied!

Do all Rolexes have the same winding mechanism? Even the older ones?

Had the same issue with a pre-owned Rolex buy, had it serviced and the issue was gone.

Don't worry that you might have damaged it, I'm sure that you didn't, it's in need of a service.
