A.Lange Daymatic RG vs Rolex DayDate2 "President" WG

I have posted threads about both watches before and now trying to pick the final one. Here are the two watches with their plus and minus. I think they are very different but both so fabulous and likeable. I have bargained them and they can be had almost around the same price. Basically I like both and can easily be happy with either one.

A.Lange Daymatic RG

(+) Haute Horology credentials
(+) Exclusive, not many people will have it
(+) Handmade. Gorgeous workmanship and finishing esp the display back

(-) Fragile looking, not an everyday watch
(-) Service Centre not readily available
(-) Resale value not great

Rolex DayDate2 President White Gold

(+) Typical Rolex Robustness and Reliability
(+) Rolex DayDate line's prestigious image ( yeah, it's just marketing... but )
(+) Better resale value

(-) No display back
(-) Heavy though I think I can get use to it

What you think? Any thoughts appreciated.

FYI, among my existing collection, I already have a IWC Portuguese RG Chrono, an AP Diver, an AP 15400, an Omega Planet Ocean, a Rolex Explorer II and a Rolex Datejust.

This will be interest . Every poll Rolex struggles here...wierd...some sort of iverted pride or trying to proove who's the biggest WIS...just strange that Rolex nearly always fares poorly in these polls.

ROLEX wins my vote as it displays its Character and I think others apart from name could be any make quite honestly.

Get the A. Lange & Sohne. Amazing, exquisite piece of horological art.

Then, pick up a steel Datejust II to cover the elegant daily wearer niche. Very similar to the DDII in size, look, and movement, etc. --- just much more reasonably priced due to the non-precious metal content. Even better deal if its lightly pre-loved!

In terms of WIS hype, ALS almost always wins, but I was underwhelmed by it when i tried the platinum version on. I'm going with the DD.

While the ALS is a "better" watch horologically, if the choice was up to me- the DD, just because of the ease and relative cost of servicing as well as better resale value

I'd go for the Lange myself, especially considering its my favorite brand.
I do own a day date 2 in white gold and wear it often. To me though, the Lange offers much more of a unique "package" than the Rolex. You hit on several of the pros for the Daymatic, but I'd argue with the cons. Some with more experience may differ, but I don't think service is a major concern, at least at this time. I believe Alkis does a great job keeping the backlog of servicing down to a reasonable level and does a great job.
As far as the Daymatic being fragile looking and not an everyday watch, I disagree. While I wouldn't wear it rock climbing, I would wear it for everyday business use for sure. As far as looks go, there's no reason not to wear it often. For me, as a daily wearer, I'd probably go white gold as its less flashy, but that's just my taste.
The last item you mentioned was resale. If you think you may be flipping, buy a preloved Lange and head off any potential initial drop in value from new.

Good luck and keep us apprised.

Based on how you presented the pros and cons, I would say, for you, the DDII.

Hello Ken. Thanks for your insights. Servicing a Lange is indeed rather problematic as I heard the nearest service centre in Asia is in Hong Kong and for any major repairs, they still have to send back to Germany which will be 4 - 6 mths lead time. Why I say is fragile is because I notice the case and the movement, there isn't much space in between which means the watch most be worned with care and cannot take knocks. Not that I think the DD2 can take knocks, but I am kind of clumsy. As for buying pre-own, there isn't much choice going around and I have yet to see a Daymatic available LNIB yet in my area.

be good to know what you already have in your collection, but for me it boils down to:

Richemont brand circus vs Rolex independent?

you can wrap as much marketing bollocks around the ALS but i choose Rolex for the reason it comes from an independent maker

EDIT: can see what you have in your collection. if you want a dress piece look towards patek

The ALS is beautiful, but I'd choose the DD2.
Fits in better as a daily or regular wear watch (in my life anyway).

The Lange is a compelling option, but I give my vote narrowly to the DD2.

For my use, the DD2 seems a bit more practical and robust (even though this last point might be imagined).

ALS Daymatic between those. Of course you are in the Rolex Forum so don't expect too many to not pick the DDII.

i dunno. rolex, patek and other "independent makers" are corporations seeking to generate profits just like any other company. to think that "independents" aren't motivated by the same end goals (making money, developing brand equity) is just silly, IMHO.

also, when it comes to "marketing bollocks", rolex is the undisputed king.

just my two cents....

Quite surprising that anyone would put owner structure of the company over the actual watch. Oh well, to each his own. I would go with the ALS since it is way, way nicer in every way from design to execution and finish.

I've got that same dial dd2.

It's a really super piece. Clearly, I'm biased. But no contest.

ALS for me, particularly if you have a Rolex in the collection, an ALS is on my wish list while my Sub and Datejust will always be enough Rolex for me. My wish list to complete my watches is an ALS a basic Royal oak and a PP Nautilus or Aquanaut.

To me completely different watches.

I'd get both to have for different occasions.

If only one, then ALS.
