For my kid first electric guitar : Fender Stratocaster or Telecaster? Why?

I'm not a guitar player, so I don't really know about guitar. But I love Rck music. I want to give my kid a present, which one good? please vote and the reason why. Thanks.

Kindly Regards, Heru (TR).

P.S : Many my favorite guitarists including SRV used Stratocaster. Maybe that's a good point for Strat.

Stratocaster is the way to go, Telecaster is county & western.

Just so you know, the lead guitar on Stairway To Heaven was done on a Telecaster.

Jimi Hendrix played a Telecaster initially. He also said there were two sounds you could get out of one - good and bad. Some say the two sounds are country and western, please see the above. <smile>

The thing you need to know is Telecasters are unforgiving and they expose your faults big time. In fact, Elliot Easton (from the Cars) has in his Telecaster Forum signature "It's impossible to tell lies on a Telecaster!"; here is a recent thread where he commented, see post 18.

As much as I hate to say it, I vote Strat too, if only to keep them interested in guitar.

Wait because 1 guy makes a lame joke about the telecaster being for country and western you immediately go for the strat?

The Telecaster is, together with the Gibson Les Paul, one of the most versatile (and most famous) guitars you can get.

Imho the telecasters plays much smoother than a stratocaster, the feel is much better and I like the sound a lot more. Again to each his own, and it's really depends on what a guitar player likes so it's a difficult decision. Why did you get car A, why did get get that watch. It's about looks, emotion, sound, ...

Why not look for a Mexican Stratocaster to start with, there are some good signature guitars for a resonable price.

It's not smart to put in too much $$$ at the start, maybe it's only fun a few months.

I'm pretty close to get a Ritche Blackmore Stratocaster, we have to see how it ends.

How old is your kid going to be, Heru? Post 6 by Jocke makes a lot of sense. I was lucky to purchase a Gibson SG from a beverly hills mom whose kid, after watching guns n roses thought he can become a rock star someday. After a couple of months, it just started collecting dust and eventually ended up for sale on CL. And is now part of my gear.

My kids now 14 and 10. Both now love and learn guitar. Just want to surprise 'em.
Buy a standard Strat? Standard Strato or Classic strato?

Can't go wrong with a Tele or Strat.

Ask Robert Plant, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck how Country & Western a Tele is.

Mexican strat all the way, they are reasonably priced and solid like a rock. Les Paul's are too expensive unless you go the Epiphone route, and they tend to be more fragile because of the mahogany neck and angled headstock. If it falls it will probably break. Your safest bet might be one of those Squire Stratocaster value packs that come with an amp, cable etc. You can pick one of those up for about $200.

ARLO! YES!

I don't hang around the Telecaster forum too much anymore but have been a member since '05 and I remember Arlo there when he used to contribute a lot. He also made a few Telecasters himself, I believe out of old barn wood.

How about the Master of the Telecaster ... Albert Collins!

Not to mention PJ Harvey, Alex Lifeson, Bill Frisell and, obviously, The Boss.

Go with the strat.

There is nothing like the sound of the strat's three single coils, and it is an iconic a guitar as any made ever.

Spend the money on the US version. If for some reason you ever have to sell it, it will retain it's value.

I bought one for my brother as a wedding gift. We'd played in bands together for years. I was his best man. The tele is a great guitar, but every collection must absolutely have a strat.

I've played in bands with guys who used everything from Musicmasters, to PRs, to SG's to hand made six strings. Every guitar player I know owns a strat.

I saw Jimmy Page with "The Firm" in the mid eighties.

He played a tele most of the night.

Here's my suggestion. Take him to the music store and let him pick it out. At the end of the day, if he doesn't like it....he won't play it. If he picks a high end axe, go for the middle of the road one and have him prove himself before spending the dough on the top dollar. I would shy away from the cheap starter bundles, many times these guitars are so inferior they actually make the experience of learning horrible (i.e. sharp frets, too much string tension, etc.). I say pick a nice guitar, then take one step back and that's a happy medium.

I agree. Involving the kid is a fun part of it, and don't overspend first time out. By the way, how old's the kid? That makes a difference. Also, does the kid want to play rock and roll? Start with what the kid wants, or might take to, more so than what you aren't going to be playing.

I more or less agree about the Strat v. Tele. A rocker who plays a Tele is acknowledging some country or rockabilly player, a James Burton or whoever, to make that choice. Strat is purer rock. (Plus, the Tele is such a log. A wonderful log, but you have to have advanced aesthetics to appreciate it. LOL)

Jocke might be joking but the telecaster really is the pick for country music playing...oh yeah, the strat too...and the Gibson lp!

I'd probably go for the mexican lonestar strat. They'd love the seymour duncan pearly gates humbucker bridge pickup. It boost the sound into a new level! Inexpensive compared to the american lonestar but almost the same specs. And a tremolo bar is a plus. Kids love messing with those. Learn to use it correctly and they won't lose interest. Just my opinion.
