Icon5 Been savin' up but what should I get?

Small wrist's 7". I have enough for a Stainless Sub or GMT II, but want to have one nice watch that I wear forever or until I get enough money to by another...lol

I have seen some fellows purchase from Bob's Watches, and there is of course a savings for buying pre-owned. I could save more and get a Solid gold GMT for around $26k or buy a New 904L GMT II for about $9800.

1. What year did the New Blue superlume come out? I would imagine that the New lume is more desired than the green, or is the green classis and I should go for that?

2. I like the Easy-Link system for expanding the bracelet. Anyone know what year that ceom out on the GMT II?

3. The 40mm Yachtmaster with the Rhodium Bezel is about $10K and While at a local AD, I kinda like the feel. Anyone own one who feels it's more comfortable than a Sub or GMTII?

4. Lastly, I'm a blue collar guy and money doesn't come as fast as it used to. Will I miss out on being able to take my BobWatches watch to Rolex? I'm told they use Rolex parts and the repair guy is as good as a regular rolex watch guy.

thx

You might want to take a look at an Explorer II, as well. I think that the movement is the same but the GMT II has that twisty bezel. I have both of these and end to wear the Exp II more often. It seems to me that the Exp II might wear a bit better in blue collar surroundings, if that matters.

Hello, you have a big choice ahead, congrats in advance. Firstly, I don't consider 7" wrists to be small, you are right about average, as far as posts here go. The Sub, GMT and Yacht should all fit you nicely. As for your questions:

1. All the ceramic Subs, the DSSD and the BLNR GMT have the blue lume. It is just a matter of taste compared to the green one, that is merely subjective.

2. Can't tell you when it came out exactly, but the ceramic GMTs have the easy link system, while the divers have micro adjustment in the clasp. This last method is considered superior, while the easy link also does the job on the go.

3. AFAIK, the Yachtmaster has a Pt. bezel.

4. If you want to save some bucks and still be able to use Rolex warranty, simply buy your watch from one of the Forum's trusted sellers. They will possible give you a better deal than BobWatches too.

Best of luck.

Just go to a decent AD and try them all on; you will know the right one when you see it.

"...one nice watch that I wear forever..." Yeah, right!

Both watches are great, you can't go wrong either way. I have both and love them. If I could only have one, I'd get a Sub. It's versatile...looks good dressed up or dressed down.

the YM Feels more comfortable on my wrist, but will a GMTII feel just as good?

I have gone to about 4 Rolex Ad's but It's hard to really get a good feel with a 5 minute watch wearing experience.

I like the Yachtmaster 40mm 116622, but I want the Easy-Slide or ratcheting bracelet, and a ceramic dial.

Looking at the Rolex website and the Ebrouchure it seems they only have 2 in 40 mm.

1. They have only the 116622 with the Blue Face, 40mm, Platnum Bezel,

2. Two-Tone Grey face 16623 40mm yellow gold bezel.

I kinda wish that either came with a expandable bracelet, and wanted to ask if anyone has a guess as to why it doesn't?

Also, Watch #2 is only 5 numbers and is that indicative of an older watch?

It doesn't say but does either of the above watches ome in the new blue lume or green?

Lastly, has anyone purchased a YM above and gotten bored with it? Because there isn't much to play with on the watch once one sets it...

I would try out the new gmt if I were you. But If you are really in love with the yachtmaster, you get some really great deals on older ones in the classified section of trf

Not looking to spend your money, but I know from experience that the YG Rolex models do not become any more affordable with time. I have flirted with more " Presidents" than Marilyn Monroe! Should have gotten the YG DayDate in 2007 for 17K from the AD in Philadelphia but balked. Now it's 34K! Faint heart never won fair maid!
Buy what makes you happy and go big if you can. Your choices are terrific thus far, but reach for the stars if that is your aim. Just my thoughts

If I buy a watch from someone her on the board, Will I be able to take it to Rolex for servicing?

I really like the Ceramic bezel's, and adjustable bracelet, so I'm leaning toward the GMTII.

Other's have mentioned the Exp II, and I like the idea of the shock absorber, adjustable bracelet, and blue lume. I am worried however about scratches without the ceramic bezel.

The ceramic bezel keeps the watch looking like new.

Also, I have heard the Exp II has a little thinner back?

There are numerous threads about the ceramic bezels. They do scratch, just a bit harder to scratch. There is also a thread with discussion if the ceramic is making watches more fragile, because if the watch is dropped, or the bezel is cracked, broken, etc. they are not cheap to replace. Not trying to discourage I have the Hulk which has a ceramic bezel, and I love it, just want to make sure you know this.

ps, if you have the watch's authentic serial#, Rolex will service it. Perhaps, not under warranty depending on the age of the timepiece.

I agree.

You could easily mistake my wrists for a girls' since its just over 6,5 inches. Those 0,5 inches makes a huge difference when removing links on the oyster bracelet... Hehe..

That's good to hear. So, If I do purchase a Rolex from another member, and the watch was purchased from say a member here Originally from an AD only 11 months ago, I would;

1. be able to have 1 month of warranty since the warranty stays with the watch and not the Original purchaser

2. be able to take it to any Rolex AD for servicing throughout the life of the piece?

Also, I wanted to ask if the Larger faced watch's will be just a fad like smaller ones were many years ago?

Has anyone purchased an explorer, only to think that he/she wishes that the watch maybe a bit smaller, and have a ceramic bezel?

LuminousMaximus,

I don't know all the specs you asked for, and unfortunately I don't have the time to search for you now. But what I can really tell you is that buying a Rolex isn't only buying it! Or at least that's what I experienced, after buying one.
You need to have the money for maintenance, money I barely had! So don't forget that you always need to save money for the ''rainy'' day, so you can pay the jewelers bill. Otherwise you will lose your warranty, and so I've lost mine :'(

Hopefully this was helpful for you,

Joran

( I can deeply recommend the GMT Master II (116710LN)
I'm buying one myself next week, try to keep my warranty this time ;)

I think you'll get a better deal here with the trusted sellers... Don't just look at the prices and models, look at the year. I know you're looking for ceramic, but in regards to his prices in general, he has some great prices but they're usually '80-'90s models... For example, I bought a 16710 from 2003 a while back from a trusted seller and I got it cheaper than his same model made in 2000. Mine was also recently serviced. Not trying to talk crap about bobs watches, I look through his site all the time, I'm just relaying some things I've learned from the research I did prior to my recent purchase.

OP, if you bought an 11 month old Rolex you would actually have 13 months of warranty remaining, as factory warranty is two years, not one.

Yes, you would be able to take it to Rolex for servicing for life of watch, at your expense of course (regardless of whether you buy new/preowned, warranty work is free, maintenance isn't).

I suggest you do what Im doing. Buy a used subc for 12-15% off retail and enjoy it for a while as you save up for the GMTc YG. Then when you sell the subc you will get back 90-5% of your money. Unworn GMTc YG from trf dealers are around $21 or 22K, don't pay anything over $23K.

The only ceramic part of "ceramic Rolexes" is the bezel insert btw. Yachtmasters are stunning. Don't forget that they come with white dials and BMOP dials as well, and they're available in full YG. Full-gold Yachtmaster with the white face is a personal favorite of mine....

The 5-number serial is indicative of a model that hasn't been updated in the past few years, that's all. The watch itself could be brand new. They haven't made any major updates to the two-tone Yachtmaster so 16623 is still the newest one. The 116622 model only came out pretty recently.

Good luck with your decision...and for what it's worth, if you're truly looking for just "one good watch" to have, I recommend picking up a steel Rolex Submariner and calling it a day.

Another good alternative is the WG Sub. Like I said earlier, I'd have bought one of these sooner, had I known then what I know now.
