Do You Care if Your Watch Gets Scratched?
With the influx of "watch scratch" posts recently, I thought I would start a poll to see what percentage of Rolex owners care if their watch gets scratched? Please vote!

It's a watch, it's going to happen, why cry about it?

I buy them to wear them and as long as the scratches are minor I don't loose any sleep over it.

I don't unless it was made by somebody else because he or she doesn't care about my belongings. If I wear it and it gets scratched I get over it very quickly usually (that is, unless I hit it hard enough to break something inside...).

I can't tell, because mine are all vintage, and although in excellent condition, they have had a life already. I am still careful though.

To answer the question honestly, sure I care if my watch gets scratched - I'd rather it not get scratched. But I also don't cry or lose sleep over it.

I agree, you're nuts if you don't care, but as you said, it doesn't meant you should go and polish it every 5 minutes or that you should lose sleep over it. Gather a few years worth of scratches and you'll be hard pressed to notice any new ones unless they're big ones.

Only if you let someone look at it and they drop it. Happens with various items luckily nothing too valuable to me yet

All kidding aside, mine got scratched the second day of wearing it new out of the box. I was glad to get that first scratch out of the way quickly and haven't worried about it since.

A couple of war wounds while diving are just good memories really.

I don't mind scratching it but if it happens because someone else isn't careful enough I would be rather annoyed. Especially in the case of the OP when a Rolex AD does it yeah well ... sucks. |

Light scratches are inevitable. So do not fret over it. They can be easily polished when send in for servicing.
Most importantly, do not have any major dint or dent. Or worst dropped and cracked the crystal. That is expensive to fix if you send in to RSC. If your friends want to handle your watch just to look at it, I will normally warn them: "Once damaged consider sold at market rate". It usually works for me. .

For me its all about my mind set and the phase I am in with the watch. When first getting a watch for a certain time period I want it to be perfect but then the inevitable happens.
Take for example my Sub LV that I bought in 2008, for years I babied it and wanted it to look as perfect as possible. Then years later after the scratches added up and I realized how much of a tank this thing is I was more tolerable with scratches and imperfections. Then back in February I had it serviced and it was like new again, so I'm back to the phase where I want it to stay perfect. I am wiser now and know that scratches will happen and I do not fret about it as much. Also, bought a Ball Night Train back in January and that I am still babying but know it is more of my daily beater so it will accumulate scratches. |

I sold my AP royal oak because it felt too finely finished for my (often clumsy) lifestyle. A Rolex though, I feel it's meant to take on some wabi.

I buy rolex because they are tough. I don't love scratches. But I'm not upset about them
Ultimately. I don't care.

Exactly its just a wrist watch and any wrist watch will get scratched that's a simple fact or wearing.Just cannot see what the fuss is over a few very minor scratches reading some of the post lately on forum. All scratches from normal wearing should be dealt with at normal routine service only every 5-7 years its that simple. If some what to polish for every single scratch they see, take my advice keep the watch in its box, as to polish for every single scratch that's the way to ruin any watch.

Yes I care.
Having said that I wear all my watches and enjoy them. Scratches are a result of using the watch as intended. I also care if my car gets scratched but I still drive it to work.

No I don't care. If I did, my watches would just sit in their boxes.

It's not the best question, what would be better is - what lengths do you go to -- to AVOID scratches...?
Do you bring your arm up to your chest to avoid bashing a door frame? Do you keep scotch tape on your clasp to avoid desk diving scars? (some actually do this) Do you just wear your watch inside your house? Do you LEAVE the stickers on your watch for as long as possible? (some actually do this too...)? Do you constantly polish your watch? So on and so forth.... |

As per my well used sub post I do not care at all what happens to my work watch. My SS/18 DJ w/ Jubilee is another story. Yes I occasionally get a hit here and there which makes me cringe, it seems to hold up pretty well.
That is why I guess it is a subjective and personal issue. I personally don't get those who purchase a "tool watch" and treat it like a pussy. Back in the day when I bought my sea-dweller and it's replacement Sub, one would never baby or question it's ability to handle pool water, the Ocean, and even showering. For Chrissakes, in the sixties you could attach a timex to a outboard motor and it would" take a licking and keep on ticking". Thats how a rollie used to be. |

Scratches are not an issue for me.
I dont believe in polishing either. However, a significant ding, especially in a bad spot would be sad.

I'm ok with the odd scratch here and there. Watches are meant to be worn. However, a nasty deep blemish would bother me a bit. And the crystal must always be clear.
