Rolex Sub not dressy?

A friend of mine recently told me that the sub is too "sporty" for him... I know its a tool watch but please.... this looks mighty dressy with the right attire if you ask me!

No. I don't think the sub is dressy... That being said, it's supposedly one of the very few " sport" watches that can be matched with a suit. To each their own. That watch looks great to me in any attire.

Your friend is absolutely right, he has to be. He said it is too sporty for him, and he should know. Until he changes his mind that is.

Not too sporty for most of us to be able to pull it off with a suit and tie, though.

I bought my 14060m partly to have a watch slightly dressier than my GMT.

That said I don't think it's a dress watch. If you are on vacation with one watch, wear it. If someone is looking to purchase a watch to wear with a tux, no way a sub should be it.

Another vote for YES, it is definitely dressy enough in my opinion. As I mentioned in a different thread I had always planned on buying a Sub and mainly for work - which for me is either my home office or traveling and in meetings with high level execs from the largest companies in the world in many different verticals (broadcasters, banks, telcos, etc). In the end I went with a different Rolex but the main reason being I see many of them almost daily on those very execs wearing very expensive suits. These are guys that could afford any watch without batting an eye, and many of them choose the Sub.

The Submariner was quintessentially a working man's watch, thus the term "tool" that is so often applied to it.

It was Fleming and Hollywood that connected Rolex and the Submariner to the dual worlds of suave sophistication and derring-do of James Bond.

It is ironic, I think, that Rolex more or less fell into this happy arrangement, especially since they refused to provide the production company with a specimen to use in the film that gave the watch such notoriety.

And even after years of Omega buying their way onto the screen in the company of Mr. Bond, it is still Rolex with whom Bond is most often associated.

Nevertheless, without Ian Fleming and his famous character, Mr. Bond, the idea of wearing a working-class watch with a suit and even formal wear might still be the absurdity that it was once considered to be.

Today, of course, the march of digital technology in the world of diving and in material science of the world of horology, the Submariner is mostly an upper-middle and upper-class mark of distinction.

I have seen plenty people wearing that sub on formal occasions.
Probably your friend has many other dressy watches for selection.
Otherwise the Sub is a very versatile watch to fit all occasions.
