Is yellow gold the new steel?

I am new to the forums and I have decided to buy my first Rolex, a YG sub. I love YG, even though I have light skin. My wife thinks I am crazy and should go with steel! But a YG Rolex is magical IMO, and also seems to be emerging in response to the sea of steel out there, especially with those 40ish and younger. Does anyone else think that YG is he new SS?

Steel will always be steel. A GMT in gold, especially vintage looks great. Subs I can take or leave.

Not unless rolex starts charging 4x the current rates for steel watches. That said, although the YG GMT with black dial is sublime, I don't care for any other YG or two tone watch that rolex makes. Now the WG and platinum watches---they are show stoppers

On Subs I prefer SS, on the DJ, DD and II's (any non-tool watch) I like a precious metal.

Greg, interesting that youre going for the YG sub when most here prefer the YG GMTc. Any reason why you want a diver in all gold?

I think steel remains steel and yellow gold remains yellow gold, however, the important thing to remember is that you must buy a watch that you love! If you prefer the gold Submariner then, by all means, go for it and be happy!

Funny you mention skin color - I do think yellow gold looks amazing on dark skin. My doc had a gold watch on the other day and the color just popped. Now with my pasty white wrist, it doesn't quite have the same effect. So TT for me.

The general consensus here is that YG is for old men.

Young men wear white metals.

Personally, I think YG looks good, but my wallet and I prefer stainless steel.

At 58, I'm too old to detect a trend among the young. But I do hear that yellow gold is making a comeback. Same for high rise pants, bow ties, etc.

I LOVE my YG! I like knowing that, no matter what, it has value. I could run it over in my car and still get enough money to get out of trouble. ;) Or get into trouble I suppose.

I also looked at the YG GMT but there I thought the dial a little too busy. Also the idea of a YG submariner is a little crazy in itself; steel is a better material for such a tool. I like that contrast as well, I suppose! But I did get a little tunnel vision when I saw the WG sub too.

Welcome to TRF.

A YG Submariner for a first watch is a real WOW!
Gold price will always keep their numbers low relative to steel.
Some don't like tool watches in gold but go with what you like.
Are you leaning towards the more popular great blue dial or the less common but beautiful black dial?

Not a fan of anything yellow gold, I don't see a lot of young people wearing it.

YG Submariner blue face has always been my favorite Rolex. Second choice is the TT blue face Sub. Owned two of each over the years. Love the new ceramic Subs!!

No and I do not understand what you mean. Gold is gold and steel is steel.

Buy what you like but do not confuse the two.

Greg,
Get what you want and if it is a yellow gold Sub then so be it! Who cares what we think here on TRF. It is your money and so you should get what you want. I have the WG sub and love it. I don't get the YG GMT love here. Love the GMT but I don't agree that it is better looking than other references. I also see where many don't like diamonds on a mans watch but they also look great! Just get what you want the most!

If you're asking is yellow gold cool again for the younger generation, I would have to say yes.

At one point most people would have said if yore below 50 YG looked dated, but i don't think this is the case anymore. It's somewhat trendy now IMO.

Funds permitting I would love to add a YG DD2 or YG GMT 2 C into the lineup.

Yes, currently you may select from one of the three, but if you are planning on wearing high waisted paints with bowtie and gold watch currently you must remain indoors thus avoiding a literal sh-t storm of a catastrophic public fashion faux pas of the highest magnitude.

I haven't really noticed any more gold watches over SS recently and probably see about 6 or 7 steel for every gold one. There are some exceptions to this as in certain areas near where I live it can be closer to 1 for 1 but this is also an older (and much wealthier) demographic.

I love the look of Gold and have one yellow gold watch (not rolex) but I find it a bit blingy for daily wear so I tend to only wear it for special occasions. I have a SS as a daily work watch but I find the TwoTone fits in between and is good for any other time.

I would love a WG or Platinum watch but they are a bit of my reach at the moment and it would probably end up in a safe for all but a few times a year.

I wouldn't have it any other way but a GMT IIC Solid 18K!! I looked at the 18K Sub...just didn't sing to me like the GMT IIC 18K! I would try this one on at your AD if he has one...most don't and have to order. It's an awesome watch and people just stare! An all Gold watch is just amazing to look at especially the GMT II C!

Caching, that's what I am talking about!! Just something about that YG that makes me smile. I plan on wearing it as a daily. Like I said my wife thinks I am nuts and she is usually right about, well everything, but surely not this. We'll see I guess!!

I would say SS is the new YG.

To me YG seems truly old fashioned and pretentious, but don't be offended, that's just me.
