Smart Watches
Samsung and Apple are coming out with their Smart Watches in the near future. Wondering if anyone thinks this will have an impact on classic watch brands like Rolex, or on the entire wristwatch industry in general. Is this the future of wrist watches, or just a gimmick? Pictured is Samsung's rumored "Galaxy Gear" watch.

I would not wear one as I'd miss my archaic timepieces too much.

Tough to say. Most of us here are raised on old school timepieces but what of the future generations that grew up with smart phones and other portable technology always at their finger tips?
It seems to me that while there might be a niche for smart watches, they won't replace the fine watch. My reasoning is that in order to do that they really also need to replace the smart phone because if there is still a demand for technology in a phone then the need for a smart watch is greatly reduced (you don't need both). Now, any technology that could become available in a watch would also be doable with a phone and the phone has at least one distinct advantage. Tasks involving operating the keyboard, like texting and emails, are better accomplished with two hands (or two thumbs if you will) and this is not available with a wristwatch without taking it off the wrist. So I'm not convinced the smart watch will even replace the phone, and this leaves plenty of room for fine watches just like there is now in the presence of smart phones. My sense is that there will always be a place for fine timepieces. Besides, they convey good taste, appreciation of craftsmanship & enduring style, and yes, status even.

If cheap quartz didn't kill the watch industry neither will these. Maybe the fashion brands will be affected though.

Those things will be out of date before they are out of the box, my Sub will outlast me and be passed on.

Have enough problems remembering to charge my phone and get annoyed having change battery in quartz every 2-3 years, so charging these every 4 days just to get the time - no thanks.

I'm not really sure what the smart watches will do better than the smart phones. Wouldn't appeal to me. I'd rather wear an analogue watch. No doubt their will be a Rolex app to turn it in to a sub etc.

Those aren't something I would wear to work, or any place I'd want / need to "dress up". And as others said.. my Rolex will most likely be around to pass down. Those would be out of date and obsolete before they were taken out of the box.

I would wear a smart watch if it doesn't look like a watch, because i already have "watches" that I want to wear :)

So clueless
Everyone seem so clueless about smart watches here.
yes I believe it can and will impact the current watch industry. It doesn't make them go away though. smart watches are not competing with smartphones as most seem to think here, they compliment each other. and I actually hope Rolex and other big players in this industry recognize the trend and do something about it. My thinking is for Rolex to create a second brand that is as classy as other Rolex watches but it have an interchangeable brain so that the body can still outlast the user, but the brain can get updated every few years. |

It might be fun to play with, but I'd be embarrassed to wear it outside the house.

Nice first post.
But I suppose you're right in that everyone is clueless, including yourself. No one knows for sure what the future will be for these things. But if, as you say, they don't compete with the cell phone but only compliment them, then they shouldn't be a threat at all to Rolex since the smart phone has been around a while and has yet to pose a problem for the upper echelon of fine watchmakers. If they pose a threat at all, it would be to the inexpensive quartz watch, and not to those like Rolex. Frankly, I believe if the smart watch does take hold it will ultimately help the Swiss watch industry because it will bring important players back who have been missing from the game of wearing something that tells the time on their wrists - young people. And when this group matures and can afford a Rolex, they will buy one. And yes, they will for the most part prefer the cyclops over hitting "control +" on a keypad.

I'd highly doubt it. Not even the Quartz watch movement killed our beloved mechanical watch industry.

Several companies are working on a cellphone on the wrist and dialing/interface via Siri-like comm/wireless earbud. The holding factor is battery technology (batteries are still too big/lack enough reserve). When this is overcome, the cellphone smartwatch I believe will be uber popular.

I recently got a Pebble watch and reall enjoy wearing it. It indeed doesn't feel like a watch, its more like a "device", but the part where I can create custom watch face is kinda fun.
My creation, and I have done a few other since then

I looked at the Pebble and chose the Meta Watch as being a bit hardier. I love the functionality between the heads UPS on calendar events, never having to listen to my phone ring, swing weather and stock information, texts and much of what I carry my phone for without the need to constantly be flipping it out. It is a relief to me to have it. I think the Pebble is more popular because of the obvious customizability. The second iteration of the MetaWatch software was a nice improvement. Glad to see you like yours. I think Pebble may have chosen the better screen technology.
