What do you wear when watch shopping?

This kind of came up on another thread, but it was an ancillary topic, so i t didn't really get explored.
I've always made a point of wearing a nice watch when out at a jeweller.
I believe that I'm taken more seriously, and that the sales rep is much quicker to come over if they think that I may actually walk out of there with something.

Others seem to think that their bargaining power is impaired if the jeweller thinks that they have too much wealth...

I'm always interested in improving my strategy...what do the rest of you guys think?

I just wear the watch I happen to be wearing when visiting AD's. I don't mind what model it is.

I have always thought that wearing a nice watch when going to a jeweler shows that you're a legitimate prospect rather than just someone casually looking. My opinion is that the sales reps will take you much more seriously. I have experienced this first hand last year when I had 8-10 watches out of the case at once. I doubt they would have done that if I had not come in wearing a Rolex to begin with.

Always wear something you are comfortable with - not to impress or catch somebody's attention. That way you do not have to worry of what others think of you!

I was wearing my Rolex when I popped into a neighbouring competing jeweller down the hall from my AD. I wanted to check out their Panerai's. I thought much the same as Andrew did in that the sales rep did take me rather seriously. She brought out 5 Pannies to ogle. However, I lost interest when she implied that Rolexes were rather common, and that Panerai's were selling like hotcakes. Sales pitch to a perceived weak ego I thought. Pannie's still have that Fad Flavour to me...so I went off.

I wear what ever I have on, jeans, t-shirt and usually my watch, sometimes under my shirt, I never try and have it one way or the other for any reason, it is what it is.

I only have two watches, both of which are Rolexes, so I always have a Rolex on whenever I go to look at watches. As for how I dress? I dress down a lot on the weekends. (My wife says I dress like a scrub on the weekends.) I don't dress to impress. This is particularly true when I look at cars. Those guys are the worse, I think.

I wear my GMT II C since it's my only rolex. I visited breitling and omega AD's and the treatment that i received amazed me.

i really try not to think about it.. and have worn both my rolex and other watches. for the most part it seems i am treated differently based on what watch i have on. unless i am at my local jeweler and they know me. perception is reality i guess.

You know that the first thing they look at when you walk in is what you have on your wrist. I was at an AD yesterday that I don't normally shop at. Within 2 mins the sales clerk commented that I already had a nice Rolex on. They are sizing you up to see if you are worth spending time on. That is how they make their money.

However, I know a lot of people that have a ton of money and don't dress flashy. I believe that you have to treat everyone the same regardless of their appearance.

That's the most important part. The first time i entered a rolex AD i was treated rather bad because they thought that i was just kidding. The reason why this happened is my age. but when they realised that i am serious they changed their attitude towards me

Imagine going to a Rolex AD with a fake rolex on your wrist. I am trying to imagine what kind of reaction the AD or the sales people would have

Who cares? I went to several ADs so far and I wore my normal clothing and a cheapo Citizen Eco. If they don't treat me with respect , then they won't get my business.

Real vs Fake Rolex

Most AD's can't tell a fake from 6 inches much less 2--3 feet.

Stop worrying what others think and be satisfied for who and what YOU are. I often will wear a replica when I'm going somewhere that I'm not too sure of. Why ? Because I know who I am and I feel good about myself......and the real watch is home safe.

Sadly, it sounds like you've got things reversed Doc.

You wear the watch........ the watch is not wearing you.
Walk into any shop with what you want on your wrist because you are comfortable in who and what you are. That's where you stop mentally.

Sure......it takes a little time to get use to these legends on our wrists.....but turn it off and move on.

Don't wear any watch. Then, the sale rep will know that you really need a watch. And, make it easier to try on their new watch. Saving time of removing your watch first.

I don't dress any differently when I watch shop than I would for almost any other type of shopping..

I always have a nice watch on my wrist.....

If your watches aren't good ones...toss 'em, and then you have an excuse to go out watch shopping..

This is interesting. I visit ADs whenever I can in different cities and it just depends on what watch I have on at the time. I've found that Rolex ADs don't comment on, or appear to notice the watch I have on. I think once I had a salesperson comment saying "that's a nice Rolex" when I had my GMTII Red/Blk on.

I will admit that if I know I'm walking out of the store with a new watch I will wear one of my "beater" watches so I can put it in the box and wear the new watch home. Maybe they'll think "poor guy, first nice watch at his age? Better give him a break on the price...!" lol...

Oh I totally agree with you...
But I'm talking about strategy when buying a watch...I think of a smaller scale paradigm to buying a car...
I think that most of us will try to get some type of cherry thrown on top... be it a 10% discount or what have you...
I have never paid full price.
But I know that there is an absolute number in most dealers' heads that they can not go below...
I'm just wondering the best way to get closest to that number.

It's part of the fun I think... because obviously, I'm going in with a number in my head too...

I will usually cover whichever Rolex I'm wearing up when I walk into a jewelry store, if i'm wearing long sleeves that is. I never leave home without wearing one of my watches, so if one of my friends wants to drop in to look at something, i'll be wearing it and like looking in peace.

And as far as the strategy of it, I would actually go in with Rolex blaring if I was wanting to buy another. I believe that would let them know that i'm serious about buying as i've pulled the trigger before. I'd also tell them that I have zero desire to pay full price for the new watch just as I didn't pay it for the one on my wrist, and I'm looking for a deal that I can't pass up. Just MHO.
