Does anyone else think a 34mm watch is small?
Hi All,
I had an opportunity to purchase a DJ "Thunderbird" edition a few months ago I thought looked really sharp and ultimately decided not to buy it because I thought a 34mm watch looked and felt on the small side. Prior to getting into Doxa's and other dive watches a few years ago, I wouldn't have thought so at all. If I wear my Doxa for a few days at 44mm and even put on my Sub at 39mm, it feels puny. I don't think I own a watch that's smaller than the Sub. I know the trend is bigger but I also wouldn't go bigger than my T Graph at 44mm either. Anyone else think 39mm is getting on the small side or if you own them and wear it one doesn't feel small on the wrist or visually for that matter. By the way, I don't have that big of wrists at 6 3/4" but don't have a problem wearing a little bigger watch as I am just shy of 6'. Since I just bought the Daytona last week I doubt I'll be in the market today or tomorrow but would like to get a few opinions anyway. Thanks, David

David, a lot of my watches are vintage, and as such they're small (32, 34 mm, etc) by today's standards. When I first put one on it seems small compared to my clunker Sub but by the end of the day it's perfect, whatever the size.
I've seen pix of Stuart's (arttay10) limited edition DateJust Thunderbird with the MOP dial, by itself and on his wrist, and that has to be one of the best looking watches I've ever seen. I could get used to wearing that one in a hurry!

It's not a mater if the watch is large or small.
It's the perspective the wearer has himself... If you are used to large watches, then the 34/36 will seem small.. But trust me when I say this in a kind and gentle manner , most people with 44+mm clocks on their wrists look pretty dorky to the average person... I'm with Al on this... I usually wear a Rolex but have plenty of very nice vintage 34-36mm watches... I get more complements on them at the occassions where they're worn than I ever do with the others.

I thought the DJ Thunderbird (i.e. TOG, right?) is 36mm, no?

It's really a personal choice. You've got to be comfortable with what's on your wrist. Personally 36mm is my favorite size, and I'm a woman with a wrist size of just under 6.5"....don't worry about how others see it.

As most of the others have said, or implied, it's really a matter of how comfortable YOU feel. I happen to have a 7.5" wrist so a 36mm looks small on me, in my opinion. The fact that my current Rolex is 40mm also plays an important part in my perception.

If I were a rich man, I'd use a pair of 34 mm Rollies as cuff links!!

34 is a bit small but I'd wear it. 36 mm is just fine. 40mm is about as big as I'd go.
These days larger is the style. The large style has been around awhile too and does not look to go away. Still for me 36 mm is fine for a DJ, clasic simple and just the right size to fly under the radar. However if a person wants attention, go BIG! |

Honestly i consider 36mm as a small watch so i believe that a 34mm watch would be and look way too small for me.

IMO, no its not to small. I wear my AK and like the way it looks. By the way the DJ-T-bird is 36mm not 34mm.

Sorry, You are all right. the TOG aka Thunderbird is 36mm. Still, the question would have been the same. I agree bigger is not always better and in fact I think many watches have gotten too big. My 44mm Doxa doesn't seem that big till I switch to another of my watches. It also isn't that thick so it still fits well under a dress shirt.
I used to have several vintage watches and sold almost all except the ones that had sentimental value to me because I never wore them. Too afraid to get them wet and if I damaged one, too hard to get repaired in most cases. Thanks for your all your opinions. Food for thought. I guess if down the road I have a chance to acquire another TOG, I will give it some additional consideration.

I've had 34mm watches and they don't seem too small to me, just the right size for a dressier watch. That said, I think the 36mm DJ size is just about perfect for a non-sport watch. I guess it mostly depends on your perspective and what you're used to.

I remember taking my daughter to an upmarket restaurant recently. I was wearing my DD which as you know is 36mm.
When I saw the pix I remember thinking. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . That is a very small watch for such a BIG mouth.

34 MM is just too small for me.
A DJ with its 36 MM is JUST big enough to be "acceptable" to me, but any smaller watch does not look good on my wrist.

34mm is too small for me. A 36mm DJ is about right for a dress watch in my opinion. And 38mm and up for a sports watch.
I really like the Cellini Danaos, which is 34-36mm (not sure), but they make one in 38mm, which I can handle. Nice watch, but a lot of money for the watch.

It`s not too small.I often wear my SS/WG Tudor Date and it looks just great. It just give another dimension of wearing the watch on your wrist when you compare it with sport models, like Explorer II.

The 40mm Rolex sport models are the perfect size for all round wear. But there are times when I want something smaller, lighter, and that fits nicely under shirt cuffs. That's when I really appreciate wearing a DateJust. The DJ and DD models, even though 36mm, still have that Rolex "wrist presence" we love so much.

Many men shun smaller watches as if it somehow reflects their masculinity, but the truth is most 40mm watches are more than enough and unless you have the arm size to pull it off, anything more can look laughable. My brother in law is around 6'4" with large forearms and his DJ looks good on him even though it is a touch small. He could definitely wear larger, but likes his DJ.
There are pictures here of wrists that look almost delicate wearing Rolex sport watches that would look much better with a 36mm or possibly a 34mm instead. A large watch only emphasizes a thin arm and wrist, making them appear smaller. Many women look great in a larger size watch, tho. My daughter who is very petite looks great wearing a sub. |

I really doubt that anyone on the street, on the bus, subway, in a restraunt, or any where else is going to notice the size of your watch unless it happens to be one of the really "ovesize" ones. I think a difference of 2 mm is not going to to be noticed by anyone, even the person wearing it after they have had it on all day. Just like "Tools" some of my pieces are vintage, so they are smaller watches and I really never give it a second though as to the size of any of them. No one has ever said to me "nice watch, but it's kinda small for your wrist".. Most of the time I rotate between a Sub and a DJ and never give any thought to the size of either, I just put them on and wear them. To me it's like buying a big screen TV, you can see the differences when in the store with others side by side but once you get it home you have nothing to compare it to so it seems fine.

it's always hard to answer a question like this because ultimately it's your wrist and you are the one that needs to be happy with the look and feel.
i'm so used to my 40's that even my 36 dj feels too small for me. a 34 would be lost on my wrist, but, this is just my personal take on it. |

This is the smallest watch i regularly wear - It is about 30mm and is a Borgel trench watch from 1914.....
If it was manly enough to be worn in world war one it's fine for me - tho i do have thin and weedy wrists! Anything over sub size looks silly on me I also wear a 28mm Art Deco Gruen and several other vintage pieces at 30mm. So to the big watches !! Regards Tim |

I agree with the posts about the vintage watches- some of them are downright tiny, but if you wear them, you get used to them (and they're great watches). 34mm is not too small for anyone - saying it's so is like saying 46mm is too big.
