OK guys here's the story. Back in November I was at my AD to pick up a repair on my wife's ring and naturally I went to "just look" at watches. I had always had an interest in the sea dweller because of all the ads in dive mags. I really wasn't looking to buy just killing time when the salesman told me about the GMT II-c he had in the safe. I told him I'd like to see it but wasn't really looking to buy. Of course I went home with it (sound like an old story?). Now here is the problem. I think I really want the SD. Should I get it now - I think I can get 10% discount before Feb price increase or wait and see what Basel brings? I think I know the answer but I really respect the opinions of all you TRFers. Also they promised me a s/s daytona some time in 08 so my watch budget is getting really stretched, and I really don't want to flip anything. HELP!!!

I would wait. After Basel, you'll be able to decide which one you want, assuming there's a change.

It appears that with the SD, there are plenty of them around, so you won't have the trouble of finding an "older" style, which you like.

The price increase is a bit of a sticking point, but I think it's worth seeing both your options. (And who knows, maybe the price increase won't happen after all?)

This way, you won't end up with two SDs!

Sounds like you have a nice selection of watches already, especially the sport models...I'd say wait to see if something special comes out. If not, you can always pick-up the SD. They aren't going anywhere.

Get the SD now. I am not sure you would like any updated SD. It would probably have polished centre links and ceramic bezel. Would be a pity, but that is the way Rolex is going, so it seems.

polished center links are the only thing I don't love about the GMT IIc. That would probablly be a deal breaker for a new SD since I don't want jewelry.

Go for it. I believe the price will go up way before April. My AD thinks the price will go up this week; I hope not.

Get the SD now. Even if rolex updates it it's probably going to get discontinued. You can always buy an updated SD in the future

I don't expect to see any extreme upgrades to the SD.

For the GMT, it had seen it's day in the 60's and 70's when it was the latest and greatest available for aviators... It needed an upgrade to boost sales and was the best candidate to introduce the new technology.

The SD is still a good tool watch and any drastic change will negate it's usefulness...

As for buying now.. If you plan on wearing one for many years, there is no reason to wait for a cosmetic change.. especially if the cosmetics may not be to your liking...

I was in your shoes recently, having bought the SS Sub Date and GMT IIc, but always wanted an SD. In the end, I bought the SD too.

There was a thread recently, and the strong rumor is that Rolex will give the SD the same treatment as the GMT this spring, with supercase, ceramic bezel, maxi dial, new hairspring. So if you like how your GMT IIc looks, then I recommend you wait. For me, I love the classic Sub look and couldn't be happier with the way the SD looks now.

I agree. I'd think the SD would be the last Rolex to get polished center links. It's sole purpose is as a tool watch. Just my

Mate, I feel the same way. Although, like the bracelet on the GMT IIc. Please ROLEX if you update the SD, don't polish the center link. Tool watch... History.....etc.......
