Diving with GMT-Master II

Anyone dive with their GMT-Master I/II? Is it 'waterproof enough' for regular underwater use? Should I get a cheap beater instead?

Hi Fatso & welcome.

The older model GMT's had twinlock crowns and I have worn mine while swimming etc. The new model like my GMT II TT has a triplock and would be OK to 300m IMO.
Are you wearing one or thinking of buying?

I say go for it. I always think that if you own a Rolex or any expensive watch for that matter, you should enjoy every second of it and everything about that watch.

Some may say that the GMT is ok just for snorkeling. I say you take that baby down! Just be sure you are fully aware of the limits of your watch, how deep you can take it.

Also, check and make sure the crown is completely screwed in before any water related activities.

Rolex guarantees the new GMT II to be waterproof to 100 metres. I guess you should be able to even further down with it due to the Triplock crown, but would you?

The old GMT II is rated to 100 metres, and having a Twinlock crown I would not dive further down with it.

I remember seeing this site about the story of this commercial diver and his experiences with using all his rollies (DRSD's, Milsubs, Comex Subs). He also talks about taking the GMT IIc to some "serious" depths...

100m is pretty long stretch for most people who do not dive professionally. I'd go for it.

I have been diving in less than 60 feet with my 1675 GMT. No problems. However, I still decided to get a thrasher so I didn't have to worry at all. That being said, I wouldn't hesitate with a GMT II because of its depth rating. Just make sure you are current with your servicing.

Your GMT should be fine for diving within the 100m depth rating. Just make sure that it has been tested for waterproofness within the last 4-5 years.

Thanks for the comments! I won't be going down much farther than 80-90 feet - I just have to figure out how to get it over my wetsuit...

So you're saying I can wear my watch when I wash my face or let the rain hit it?

My 16753 has been down to 130' a bunch of times. No problems. Damn black coral does not start to grown until 120'. Now, it is illegal to harvest coral, and it should be.

As others have said you're fine. Just make sure the seals are in good order.
