Vintage Poljot advice

Hello TRF,

I'm interested in this vintage gold plated Poljot watch.
He asks €70,- for it, the case/crystal and movement seems to be in good condition, and he said it works fine.

Should I go for it?

I'm not sure about the price, perhaps you could try to find a better deal but as far as I'm concerned I think this watch looks quite nice Bas. If the movement works and is in good condition servicing this watch will not be that bad but a Russian movement isn't quite like a Swiss one, you may find a few surprising and strange things in it.

As well, parts aren't as easy to find as a Swiss watch. Of course Ebay is full of people selling half disassembled movements and a few parts here and there but it's still not as available as a regular ETA, ESA or Unitas movement and the brands aren't as known. If anything breaks (touch some wood, I don't want to jinx it...) make sure you know what caliber to look for and what you need.

I have a Poljot and love it. Wearing it today, actually, but make no mistake about it, the overall quality of the movement isn't up to Swiss or Japanese standards.

IMO, it's worth that just for the coolness factor!

You can always compare prices with something similar on Ebay, it may be a good price for it but I'm afraid I cannot confirm this as I haven't really looked for a Russian watch myself. I guess it's worth a try but if you're not loving it or not going to wear it often you'd better save more and buy something you'll fully enjoy.

I've seen similar watches for approximately $45, which is about half the price of this one, I don't mind paying 70 quid for it but it might be a better idea to wait a year or two so that when I start going to watchmaking school next year I'll atleast have tools and more knowledge to repair it myself and have connections with people that can help me finding the right parts.

So a year has passed and I bought a manual vintage Russian watch for 10 bucks (Cnaba or something) which works and the movement seems to be in 'good' condition.

I'm not going to wear it since it's quite ugly but I'm curious about the movement, will disassemble & assemble it this weekend and I'll make some pictures with a proper camera this time

The name is "Slava" not "Cnaba." It was a respectable Soviet manufacture.

Some people are quite fascinated with Soviet watches and I do not know why. Pretty much everything about them was super utilitarian and not in a good way. Unlike GUB of East Germany, Soviet factories crunched out very rough timepieces with incredible abilities to run slow or fast depending on their mood. Right now the the same outfits are trying to play on the nostalgia by making various models that seek the glory that never was.
