Rolex old fashioned?

I've always wanted a Rolex and view them as one of the best watches made.
Now im only 29 and have never viewed a Rolex as an old mans watch.
Which now leads me to what happened at the ad today...
So iv gone in wearing my sub c to try on a date just 11,
The sales guy that served me would have only been approximately 21 or 22 at the most. So I start looking at the rolex display case & he asks if I need any help, so iv asked to try on the blue stick dial dj11. After iv tried it on he asks if id like to look at any other brands stating that rolex is for older people
And that their designs are out dated
To be honest I was a little offended by this & thought it was worthy of a post.

So are Rolexes out dated and only for older gentlemen

Definately not, I'm 31 and love my Explorer 2. I do own other non Rolex watches. But Rolexs are not just for the more mature generation. Watches are all about personal tastes, and personal preferences.

No and I'm sure the manager of the AD would be interested in that saleman's tidbits of knowledge being given out.

This is one reason Rolex is tightening up its AD network and pressing on with the expansion of exclusive boutiques stores.

Can you imagine walking into an Apple store and hearing that Samsung has a hotter product?

The rolex demographic might skew older, not bc of its styling, but because of its higher price point. It is more difficult for younger folks to own.

Very interesting you post this today. I just had the completely opposite experience at my AD yesterday.

I visited my local Breitling and Rolex AD to check out the new Aerospace wearing my newly acquired GMT. I noticed he spied my watch as I walked into the showroom. The salesman asked what I was looking for and I gave him my usual AD line "I'm just looking for something interesting that catches my eye." His reply was "We have some interesting things but nothing as interesting as what you are wearing." He thought the vintage 1675 GMT was just an absolutely beautiful watch and one of the most perfect watches ever made. He said Rolex continues to makes beautiful watches but nothing comes close to the older GMT's.

Maybe he thought he would be more likely to make a sale if he steered you in the direction of a lower price watch.

One man's out dated is another man's timeless, you decide.

Classic designs and for some it takes a little age to afford one.

No seriously, I'm on the young side and think its a timeless design. Very clean and elegant.

Lets keep it real people. Many of Rolex designs are somewhat dated. Many have changed little in fifty years. That's just the nature of the brand. To deny it is not honest. The gmt has evolved nicely and has a fresh look. The datejust looks basically the same for nearly 70 years. Still the brand holds it's value has a loyal following and are terrific watches. But please don't tell me that some of the models are not dated. It's simply that dated is not necessarily a bad thing.

I always thought that "dated" had the connotation of being old-fashioned and out-of-style. Don't think that Rolex watches are that, IMHO.

Would have said no and I will look at these dated watches elsewhere. Bad salespeople drive me nuts. You would think all they have to do is keep their mouth shut most of the time and they would get the sale.

Old/dated vs. Classic/timeless - I prefer to think of both Rolex and my 49 yr. old self as the latter...

There are three plausible explanations I suspect:

1. He assumed you couldn't afford a(nother) Rolex so wanted to move you to something cheaper without offending you

2. He is personally responsible for another brand in the store (unlikely that he is accountable for Rolex at 21/22)

3. He is a moron!

Feel free to use number three in conjunction with one or two, or in isolation!

My other point should be that old fashioned/timeless is not something to be confused with 'being for old people'. And as a middle aged man who loves Rolex I don't mind the brand being associated with old people. There are some valid reasons for this perception

1. Most young people can't afford/justify a Rolex so the brand is naturally worn by older people

2. The designs are classic by nature (not changed much in a very long time and copied by many); this is a good thing in my iew as an ageing chap. Younger people tend to go for fashion rather than classical style; hublot and Breitling are good watches, but I consider them to be fashion watches rather than fine watches. A 10 year old Breitling or Hublit will look outdated, a Rolex generally won't.

There is nothing wrong with this (these of course are massive generalisations) so no need to fight the perception in my view.

If you are young and like Rolex, just enjoy being ahead of the curve in every way, your peers will catch up eventually!

My wife thinks I'm too young for a Bentley, it's the same thing. All good.

I was told the same thing the other day but in a crass manner. People are entitled to their own opinion and tastes I suppose.
That being said, sales associates are just trying to make a living, and he may have been responsible for a different line of watches. He probably didn't mean to offend your love for Rolex.
