Visited my AD in Los Angeles today. He told me that there is big news on the SD ... looks like they might announce a 44mm SD whose depth rating will also go up my 500m ...... they might announce it in the rolex fair in 2 months but when it shows up, is another story but there is hoopla going on about the SD... he said if that happens, then the current 4000ft SD is gonna go up in vallue since it production will be closed.

He also showed me the ceramic GMT IIc ... nice heavy watch .. as heavy or heavier than the SD and just as big ...even though the SD sort of is thicker and its srystal sticks out ....

Then to top it all, he showed me this gold watch that was 44mm ... i forgot what kind .. real fancy ... that darn thing was so heavy, it made SD look like its was made of plastic .... he said there are only 25 of them in the USA ... I felt it and wore it and man it was huge ,,, makes SD look like a mickie mouse watch ... cost $31,000 and it is sold already ....

The he showed me the same watch in white gold andsteel i think ... it was $34,000 .....

So I chatted with him for about 30mins and he gave me a free SD bezel protector ... really cool guy ....

Interesting rumour about the SD! Let's see what happens at the Basel Fair.

My wish is that Rolex introduces the slightly domed sapphire crystal that is reserved for the current Day-Dates on ALL Rolex models. That would be cool, IMHO.

if Rolex decides to follow the huge watch-size trend. I like Rolex better when they beat to their own drum.
Bigger and heavier than the standard sized subs and sd's ? Not for me.

Maybe we should post a sticky full of them to see which ones come true (Hey....I can do that.....I have the power)

I wouldn't count out a big watch from Rolex. They have gone through the research and development costs to produce the YM regatta 43mm case. It just doesn't seem right to have this case and use it for only one reference..

I wouldn't either Larry, though only Rolex knows for sure. There's a couple well connected people that feel there are legs to the rumor.....we'll see.

interesting rumour... There will be changes for SD down the road IMO but the question is always when. So let's see what they announce in 2 months time at basel.

That is depressing news for all but a minority of Rolex customers who want silly big watches. I'm thankful that I already own an SD in 40mm because there is absolutely no way that I will be buying any models that are bigger. What possible benefit is there in a 44mm watch? How can anyone justify a "professional" watch that's so impracticle? Who would pay so much for something that lacks so much in subtlety and is so "manly" it's near homosexual?! (I have no problem with homosexual people - just commenting on fashions that are popular within the culture).

I accept that my opinions are my own and that there are people who want bigger watches - I just cannot see why they need to be larger, other than for looks. A look that I feel is over the top and at the expense of practicality.

I'm getting the destinct impression that you are refering to my Tutima when you say "gigantic tank watch"

- It's actually only fractionally bigger than my SD (it's 43mm with crown, just over 40mm without) but I do find it to be larger than I would like. I have only ever worn it for work. The case size/thickness is the smallest that Tutima could fit the movement in to.

Apart from the looks of a 44mm SD is their any reason to have it that large?

And there lies the answer, it is purely cosmetic, if one likes the look of a watch then that goes a long way to the final decision on the purchase, I would hazzard a guess that few "ugly" watches are bought even though they are technically superior, having said that, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Can they not just produce some new models in the silly big sizes but also keep the existing ones at around 40mm which would give people the choice? (Fashion statement vs. practical everyday watch).

Then when the times change and huge watches are regarded as amusing fashion cliches, Rolex will not have entirely destroyed their brand image.

I still believe the Yachtmaster II is last years April Fool's joke that Rolex is still laughing about. One VP said they could release anything at any price, no matter how tasteless, and there would be people snatching it up. Funny enough, he was right.

I'm gonna hold onto my Sea-Dweller D-Ser# until I can retire. 15 years more years on the force. Wondering how much mine will be worth, if Rolex changes the SD, mine will be called the "transitional SD" and worth a million. PS I gotta go, I'm late for my appointmrnt with my SHRINK.
